I also saw - by accident - that Patrick made a new version. He fixed again a few things, including some minor issues I noticed during the beta - so minor that they didn't even get an update in the change log :D

I've tried to create a modern but classic skin:

I did email Patrick, but back then it was just one random guy noticing something (me) that could be explained by hardware differences, so I think he heard me out, but not sure if anything came of it. I’ll give it another, more thorough shot.

Ok, I mean about the limiter/chorus theory..
I think that indeed might have validity.

Yeah, I’ll send him a new note about all that.

Thanks.
Worth checking into.

I had found the service manual online.
Would it be this part of the schematics that would tell if about the chorus/limiter interaction?

This is a cleaner look (he would have looked at this during development, I hope):

I'm still disheartened by Patrick's decision to reinvent the way the JX-8P UNISON modes work. I really hope he has a change of heart and gives us a more authentic emulation.

Have you emailed him?

I actually saw the words in the manual but I am not sure what it means.. he applied it to the voices not the DCO's? (or maybe the other way around) what are the implications?

The implications are it doesn't work the way the JX-8P does.

A "modern" mode option would be fine and appropriate. Completely replacing the way the JX-8P actually works is not.

It's just kind of silly to discuss the accuracy of the chorus or a limiter or anything else, when Patrick deliberately diverged from the JX-8P's topology elsewhere.

Well maybe his chorus isn’t exactly faithful to the JX-8P, and since the chorus is kind of a huge part of the 8P’s sound, I’d prefer he get the chorus right first.

Post

You can try, but he choose that chorus deliberately as it was an interpolation between the jx and the mks70...

An earlier build had the JX Chorus, a sound designer said it didn't sound like the chorus in his Super JX.. they found out that the JX10 and J8-XP had different choruses, and their consensus was the jx10 was nicer..so he compromised and did one that was in between.
so I am not sure he would be willing to change it..but you can try.
For me it is fine... the JX chorus is a lot noisier I think I was told.

You can see it in his change list:
Version 0.9.5 / 09.03.2026

AM modulation calibrated.
Chorus calibrated after hardware.
.....

and then

Version 0.9.7 / 12.03.2026

Cleaner chorus / delay interpolation.
ARP hanging note in SOLO modes fixed.
...
He probably still has the code for the older one from 0.9.5...

I must say I am glad I am not a developer.. Because for me it would be what it is...

I have no idea how credible this particular source is.. but I think I heard similar things about the differences in the chorus:
The chorus schematic is different in JX8P and JX10. JX10 chorus is like copy of Roland Alpha Juno chorus (it has "cleaner" and grainy chorus and lush pad sound). JX8P chorus is more similar to Juno-106 chorus (so its also more noisy and sounds fatter than JX10).

Grrrr…why is he changing things? This is a JX-8P emulation, it should emulate the JX-8P. 🧐

and I hear people wishing it did dual layers etc...
What is that saying?:
"You cannot please everyone, as attempting to do so leads to frustration, loss of self, and inevitable failure."
But you already have the hardware.. so you should be happy, you have exactly the jx-8p sound.

He should give the user the option between the JX-8P or MKS-70 chorus. It could be per patch. And he should give the user the option between the Classic UNISON or his "modern" UNISON, too.

That would be the way to do it that makes the most sense and makes everyone happy.
