Just read another thread here re: "producing hip-hop."
Sorry if this has been addressed before...
My question is, why is it "produce hip-hop" and not 'create' or 'write' or 'compose' or even 'perform'? No one says "I produce classical."
Is there any history behind this phrase?
...just bored here...

That's because classical used to be composed. Usually by some bloke writing music on paper. There weren't any studios around until the 60s, so there weren't any producers either.torhan wrote:No one says "I produce classical."
Producing is more than just composing and arranging.
Hip hop is often the work of a producer. And "producing" sounds more street than "composing".
