It looks intersting but Alesis has a long way to go to rehabilitate their quality control and originality.

I think they are putting out synths at any price point they can, but they're not exactly doing thing well. For what it does I think ION is Ok at best. [sarcasm]The AN1x was better and that's only 10 years old. [/sarcasm]

If they are still milking the ION engine then the price better be outstanding otherwise it's not all that. If you want multitimbral why not look at Novations higher end line, the replacement for the Nova 2. It is slightly more than a ION but is excellent and quite versitile.

I don't hate Alesis but I no longer trust them. They've already created a bunch of products that didn't last 12 months, and worse, took the same ideas from $200 rack units and split them up into $100 floor pedals. Maybe it's me but I don't like their current marketing. Maybe this synth will do the job, but it better have a decent keybed and better be built well, not a hunk of cheap plastic with inexpensive metal where used.

I don't care where synths are built, I have a Warwick bass built in Korea and it's my favorite bass at about 1/5th the cost of most other basses I used before. Ditto with the Line 6 modeling guitar, Variax, also made in Korea. That just shows quality work is capable anywhere. The Alesis stuff was spotty when it was U.S. built. If it feels like a toy and is a expensive worksation I'm not going to be at all pleased, and I'm the kind of person they should want to appeal to. I spec systems for pro studios and home setups.

i thought it looked awesome - til i saw the bit about 192 mb max sample size - a fine size for rompler - but it aint gonna cut it as a sampler these days

how much is it has gotta be the next question ?

hehe yeah.. two things I'm a bit 'interested' are also two of the most important (to me)

A) What does it sound like? (sound demo not available until Feb!)
B) How much?

neither of those seem to have been addressed yet..

It looks bloody huge - not exactly something I'd want in my studio! Now a rack version might work out OK...

I'd bet it's going to be expensive. And, like x_bruce, I've been screwed over too many times by Alesis and their recent tendency to produce and abandon shoddily-made products that I'd not trust them until I saw many, many good reviews of the product.

yes and no

they dont mention any sort of streaming technology (unless I missed it)

basically from the write up.. what it sounds like to me is one can load a LOT of samples on the hard drive, then pick and choose which ones they want to use (ie load into RAM).

that said.. I (personally at least) wouldnt be too worried about the 192mb limit... I'd rather just wait and hear what their soundset actually sounds like before passing judgement on that size 'limitation'

Yeah I thought it looked a bit bulky too.. until I looked at other synths for reference..

Its actually little smaller than a virus kc and a little under 2lbs heavier.. according to their specs (which at the bottom of the page says: All specifications subject to change prior to product delivery

)

I think a rack version would be the bee's knees too.. probably the only way I'd afford something like this..

though I'm guessing its priced around 1.8 grand.. so who knows.

I wonder how this is going to stack up to the TI mentality now of just plugging the synth to the pc and having it load up as a vst ? AFAIK it doesnt have any sort of those type capabilities.. so maybe alesis will wiseup a bit and make the pricing competitive.. afterall they went through the hassle of an entire website for this.. the feel to me is they have a lot riding on the success of this.

hmm maybe the VA-1 is now really dead though?

their write also mentions they've been working on this for 2 years now.. hmmm and double hmms.

No, most things like this don't do DFD streaming like VST samplers do. I don't think it's aimed at being a sampler anyway, I think it's aimed at being this know-all do-all wonderboard. I think it might do everything it says, but I'd be surprised if it does any one of them well.

And why is everything always released as a full-on keyboard? I don't need 15 different sets of keys all over the studio. This is the MIDI age for Christ's sake!!! Give me rack-mounted gear for the love of *&#%)^.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, you want me to buy your hardware, make it integrate into my DAW like the Virus TI. I will be really sad if it's the only one of it's kind at this yeaar's NAMM.
