I was going though all my Tonex stomp boxes (so many great ones) and then I took the 1979 Guitar Hero MXR+ capture and brought it into Amplitube... and I notice it sounds quite different. I spent a lot of time messing with levels, and I can't get them to be similar, no matter what I do to match the gain settings. Has anyone else noticed this? From what I can tell, it sounds better to run the Tonex plugin in front of Amplitube, than to run the Tonex capture inside of Amplitube. Could they be using a "light" version of the Tonex player for resource reasons? What in the wide, wide world of sports is a-goin' on here?

[edit]Spending more time making sure the mixer was all zeroed out and level matched got me similar results.

Hrmn.....interesting question. Have you monitored the CPU usage of both of these scenarios? I also wonder if there isn't some adjustment of gain structure needed to make both of these chains sound more similar. I find a lot Tonex captures sound better with +6-12db gain boost. Personally, I feel that TONEX/Amplitube integration isn't what it should be just yet. Perhaps fully integrating the two apps might be a good way to go. Of course we are talking about IK. They might not be able to sell as many addons in that case so I guess we can forget about it.

Only thing I can think of is that there is "room mic" things happening.

Are we talking like this:

Amplitube INPUT --> ToneX in Amplitube as pedal --> ToneX amp in Amplitube --> speaker bypassed (depending?) --> Amplitube OUTPUT?

Also, I just noticed this, but if you click the mixer at the end, there is a "Bus Channel" that is kind of another gain stage in the middle before the output. Maybe an adjustment there would help?

Just spit-balling. I've mostly just been using 2 instances of ToneX, but that removes any non-gain pedals you may want to use.

I just tried two variations: TONEX with 1979 Guitar Hero in front of Amplitube 5 with Brit 8000 (Default) versus TONEX with 1979 Guitar Hero inside of Amplitube 5 followed by Brit 8000 (Default). I then exported the two variations, followed by an edit session flipping one and mix/paste into the other. The statistics on the difference showed that the resulting waveform had a peak of a little below -72 dB. Normalizing it to -12 dB and listening resulted what sounded like random noise.

The test clip I used was a dry guitar part I've used hundreds of times if not thousands for testing. The exported files were 24 bit at 44,100 samples/sec.

On Edit: I used Samplitude Pro X8 Suite for the DAW. I also deleted a mistaken comment about another test.

OK, today I spent some more time, and I had the whole cab section off, so it couldn't have been a mic, but I think it was a matter of settings in the mixer. Once I made sure everything was zeroed out, I didn't hear the difference. That's the thing about Amplitube, there are a lot of places to adjust the gain. Miss one and you can alter the sound pretty profoundly, even if the output doesn't change.

That's very true. Proper gain gain staging makes a huge difference in how captures sound. TONEX inside Amplitube is great with all the extra possibilities but that comes with a price. It definitely requires a bit more tweaking than playing a capture in TONEX standalone.
