Keys and bass. Irish Bouzouki. Appalachian Dulcimer. I‘ve thoughtof a lute, but a good one is expensive and I have enough to play with.

Drums + Percussion (hand pan. toms etc),
Guitar and Bass (Drumming made me a better bass player!)
Keys- limited/lazy (only know a few scales and use transpose on the board!)
Modular- I think its a separate thing!
I got much better at drums when I realised it was good exercise and started doing 30 minutes a day to rock play along- better than a treadmill but I guess Guitar is still my main instrument, probably an acoustic is the one I pick up most often- the original potable polyphonic MPE instrument before PUSH 3

Bass, ukulele, banjo and Irish bouzouki.
I cheat by choosing variants that are as close to a guitar as possible.
My bass is an ultra short scale Ibanez Mikro, my banjo is a 6 string banjitar and my ukulele is a 6 string guitalele. And although my bouzouki is still in Irish tuning, I am considering to swap the strings for the more guitar-like Greek tuning.
I also have an electronic hand percussion pad. I bought it to put my bad habit of tapping my hands on the table to good use.

Bass is actually my main instrument, keys secondary, and guitar a distant third these days. I also played trumpet from fifth grade through my first college degree (music theory and composition), but haven’t really touched one since. When I was a music major, I needed to gain some level of baseline proficiency on some of the more common orchestral instruments - none of them really stuck except maybe the cello, which I’d like to try again someday. I also have a duduk that I dabble with here and there, but I’ve never gotten very proficient with it and every time I remember I have it, it feels like I’m starting over again.

That's a great collection on your page!
I'd also love to play a sitar and tabla.

The collection is starting to diminish as I have begun the inevitable sell-off.Bombadil wrote: Sun Apr 19, 2026 6:53 pm That's a great collection on your page!

Getting too old for all this stuff and really need to downsize things.
Three have gone in the lat 3 weeks with a couple more coming up soon.
Unfortunately the sitar and tabla are 'extreme beginner' level.

I understand. My Missus will inherit my stuff. I've set pics with serial #s, age, provenance, and current worth for her. She'll sell most, but I'm pretty sure she'll keep my Hanika classical and my Martin OM-21.

Piano, other keys, guitar (classical, acoustic and 6- and 7-string electric), electric (currently 5-string) bass, drums and other percussion, theremin, vocals … and from time to time whatever other random instruments catch my eye - that don’t take years to learn, that is.

Proficient (played in bands etc.): guitar, bass, keys
Basic: drums (bought an e-drum kit last November, had a borrowed acoustic kit for 6 months at 17)
No idea any more: Recorder, trombone - haven't played either for decades
Otherwise have lots of random stuff lying around like various percussion (tambourine, claves, shakers, guiro, etc), that I only really play when I need to record a part for a track, a clarinet that I can get a decent sound out of but where I haven't fully figured out how to play all the notes, kalimba (with line out), ukelele (great fun!) and other random odds and sods. I've also inherited a violin without strings, that I presumably suck very much at - I borrowed a violin for a month when I was in my early 20s and practiced enough to be able to play melodies, but my bowing technique was very unimpressive
I'll give anything a try and have fun. Whether it's fun for those subjected to the noise I make is another question.

Just trying to be selfsufficient in what is needed for home studio. Growing up with Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Colosseum, Yes, Genesis so band stuff instruments from that era.
When needed I take 3 months at a time with each instrument taking lessons in between to take it further on that instrument. Recordings is in some cases still ideas from 80's with first portastudio came with compact cassette Fostex on some tapes. So redoing takes on those ideas too as well as stuff from this millenium.
- really need to practice drums now for a bit so those takes can be improved
- this kind of thinking on every instrument
All skills needed, really, mixing and getting closer to sound better in every way, soundwise too.
I have a decent modelled brass plugin and fascinated by arranging brass to do something with that too eventually. Fiddling with midi plugins to get sax in left hand and trumpet and trombone in right hand fingers separated.
Full big bands with brass at least is something else. But have long way to go there. Sky is the limit what you can do.
Vocals is such a pain if not doing it daily, so hired some vocalists a couple of time when close to finalizing songs.
- not having that good a voice either
- but absolutely fascinated by choir arrangements south of sahara that I am to study how they do each part
As retired I am blessed to do this full time now for 10 years and going....
