But it doesn't belong here. I've reported it to be moved to the proper sub forum.

Yeah, the PPG has a particular tone that is lovely and unique. A truly excellent software emulation would be welcome!

It fits here if the purpose is to encourage or discover a suitable emulation.

The only thing close is PPG 3.V version 2 which I own and is amazing. But the old PPG 2.3 vst is so old it probably won't work on modern machines. Other than that, there's nothing and it's doubtful there's going to be anything.

Waldorf's PPG 3 and even Microwave 1 plugins get very close. You can also add these wavetables to a variety of wavetable plugins for that sound. I've gotten really good results loading them into Icarus and Dune 2, though someone released a PPG for Korg's Modwave that I think sounds great.

I went on a very long quest for a modern PPG, and I learned a few things. First, the oscillator sound of the PPG and the Microwave 1 are identical. It's really the different filters that separate them. I thought if I had an M, I'd somehow get closer, but this was incorrect, as it doesn't have the same filter, though equally good, IMO. I sold it for the 3rd Wave, because I thought that might have some "magic." I was actually significantly worse than the M, at providing that sound. Then, Waldorf released the Microwave 1 plugin, which nailed it, and I sold the 3rd Wave.

What I then found, that was surprising, was that the Microwave 1 plugin had the identical sound of the PPG 3 plugin. I thought I remembered someone saying that this was incorrect, that the PPG rended the wavetables in a different way, and provided a different tone, but people who own PPG Waves corrected me. There's nothing especially magical about it. I was really just chasing the sound of those great 8 bit wavetables, which is not especially hard to get.

When the dust settled, I was really happy with the Microwave 1 plugin, because it has a bit of extra stuff that the PPG update didn't get. It's very good, and I highly recommend it. I did end up with a Polyvera, because it did the vintage wavetable thing really well, but has a lot of other interesting tricks, like per voice distortion and filter FM. But if you just want that ol' school PPG sound, get the Waldorf Microwave 1 plugin. It's just as good, and a bit more advanced.

If you want an emulation, this is as close as it gets.

And what Zerocrossing said above is true. The Microwave 1, which I also have, is great. But it's not a PPG 2.3 emulation. The structure is completely different. I haven't tried to see if it can make the same sounds (maybe it can) but the PPG 3.v is very close. That much I can tell you from experience. You'd be hard pressed to hear the difference.

Thanx gentlemen!
That is very informative.
Gonna check some demoes.

just report it to be moved, then. we dont need multiple posts of preamble about that.

I made another patch in 3rd Wave last night. Turned off 'wave shaping' for vintage sound and changed to bandpass filter to be controlled via LFO. Duplicated the voice; panned them hard L-R; changed the LP filter on one.
Never did so much on a VST for sound design.
This rack version reminds me of my old K2000RS. Great for sounds, but a pain to program.
