When it comes to typical gates (Pro-G, Expurgate, StandardGate): what makes one better than another? I mean, they all have similar controls, and basically do gating/expansion, so why choose one over another? Is it just a GUI thing or are some gates truly "better" than others?

I hear a difference.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Wed Jan 01, 2025 6:17 pm When it comes to typical gates (Pro-G, Expurgate, StandardGate): what makes one better than another? Until StandardGate, I just thought a gate was a gate. I haven't tried Expurgate, but ProG, while having a nice UI, doesn't work as well to me when I compared them in several scenarios. I''ve tried several other gates, as well. Plus StandardGate has lots more options/configurability, which is a bonus. So, to me, yes, some gates are definitely better than others. As TDR plugins and some others have proven, price doesn't always equal effectiveness/sound. I think StandardGate, esp. when on sale, is a genuine bargain and absolutely recommend it over ProG.
Big Beautiful Door 2 for some reason maxes out at a 10:1 ratio, which isn't enough some times, so it'll stay as a "specialty" tool for me vs. StandardGate.

It was so old it started to smell funny, and I've taken it down (along with the website). Got a really nice and powerful gate/expander thing built into croquesolid, which is around the corner, for those into drums.

They aren't mentioned much if at all, but i have to give a rec to Unagated by Wiregrind. it's surprisingly good. always had a bit of an issue with gates, and when i got Expurgate i thought that was it, but eventually couldn't unhear what i didn't like about it when i picked up on it comparing it to cheap analog gates i got to use in some live recorded stuff. Unagated isn't quite that snappy either as a cheap Drawmer or DBX rackmount gate, but it's pretty close. never liked Pro-G personally

Renegate easily competes with the most fine-tuned Expurgate configuration. I love both but Renegate almost feels like cheating when all you need is to cleanly reduce quieter sounds. 0 chattering, 0 transient dampening, just GATE!perpetual3 wrote: Mon Dec 30, 2024 11:45 pm Easy. Auburn sounds Renegate. The absolute smoothest gate I’ve ever used. I used the free version for years. My recommendation is to check that one before paying for a gate.

Hi guys, I'm using more and more hardware again in my studio. I have 2 dbx 166XL gates, but they are too slow for real punchy gated pad sounds or trance gate. On the other hand, I don`t want to spent 2.400 dollars for 2 Drawmer 210S - which are king in this discipline.
Now, AI meant that Auburn's RENEGATE could cope with the Drawmer hardware, as it's precise and keep the transients alive for preserving the needed punch.
All VST gates I tried so far for creative gating are so lame sounding as they loose the energy of the original track.
Can you please share your experience on that? Thank you.

Pro-G is essentially 15 yrs old, it definitely needs an upgrade.vitocorleone123 wrote: Wed Jan 01, 2025 6:52 pmI hear a difference.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Wed Jan 01, 2025 6:17 pm When it comes to typical gates (Pro-G, Expurgate, StandardGate): what makes one better than another? Depending on what computer I'm using it's the regular melda dynamics or Waves' c1 or Rvox. They work fine the majority of the time. If I need to get more complicated than that I generally will just edit things directly.

There is no AI (or AI-generated code) in Renegate so not sure why AI makes a difference for thisnichttuntun wrote: Sun Apr 19, 2026 8:21 am Now, AI meant that Auburn's RENEGATE could cope with the Drawmer hardware, as it's precise and keep the transients alive for preserving the needed punch.
