I get always hanging notes in kontakt with the violin solo in Kirk Hunter Diamond Orchestra, and also the violin in NI's Symphony Essentials, and occasionally the top line of a chord Avenger synth.

I don't get them with anything else.

I've tried every trick such as adjusting note lengths to avoid overlaps. I wrote to Kirk Hunter but he's mystified.

I'd like to understand better what makes midi notes hang.

Can you help?

Have you got a MIDI event trace module you can stick in front of the VSTi causing problems? (I like MuTools MUX because I can always wrap a VSTi in it and stick an Event Monitor in to get a trace.)

You're looking for a Note On with no Note Off for a stuck note. (Other effects that are not exactly stuck notes are where the Note Off arrives but causes an unexpected effect, such as not switching an amp envelope generator to its release phase.)

Is it something reproducible in a simple case?

Interesting .... where has the note off gone???

It only occurs for certain when I use a preset from Kirk Hunter and ditto for Symphony Essentials.

I had no idea tools like MUX existed.

I'll take a look and see if I can get my head round it.

It'll be worth fixing as both KH and NI violins are expensive & lovely presets that I'd really like to use them.

Thanks for the tip. I'll investigate

there's no single identifiable cause of it, this happens in all sorts of scenarios going back to MIDI in hardware synths; it can be a number of things interacting badly including your MIDI control device(s). As to a note-off goes missing, what it is is that it's hung. Try increasing the preload buffer size in Kontakt, giving the CPU a slight bit of breathing room

A rope?
Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.

First check where is the problem. Load Midi monitor script to Kontakt's multiscipt tab (on top of the instruments - little KSP button). Enable note on and off plus 'verbose mode' you will have all note on and note off messages listed. When a hung note appears you can check if Kontakt received the corresponding note off. If it did it's the problem with the instrument, if not it's the problem outside. Since it only happens with particular instruments in Kontakt maybe it's something there.

Edit: Another idea is to check if you have MIDI out enabled for Kontakt, if you do and you have omni as 'MIDI in' you will end up with Kontakt receiving back notes it generated itself (I constantly forget to turn it off in Sonar). Which can cause different troubles, hanging notes included.

Zombie Queen

A useful tip. I had no idea a midi monitor existed in Kontakt.

I'll try and isolate the cause in Kontakt and see where I get.

I'm not using any hardware other than Presonus Audiobox (though this occurred before my recent Audiobox install)

thanx = kev :)

ZQ - yep, thanks for the built-in monitor tip! Didn't know about that. Useful for Kontakt, certainly.

Thank you so much for the tip about both the KSP Midi Monitor Utility and the possible Kontakt MIDI feedback issue :)
