The Biggest Problem With EVERY Vocal Creation Program

I don't care if it's Vocaloid, Synthesizer V, Omnivocal or whatever. They all suffer from one thing.
Generic pop voices.
You won't find any Rod Stewarts or Geddy Lees or anything with any real grit and character.
So here's my question. Why?
Is it
1. They don't have the technology?
2. The market doesn't want these voices?
Both?
I'm asking those of you who are most familiar with the tech and the industry. That isn't me. All I know is I go through all these voices and they all sound bland.

I'm glad that's the case.
Voices like Rod Stewart, Geddy Lee, Joe Cocker, Peter Gabriel, and others are unique. If a vocal creation program could do that, they wouldn't be unique anymore.

Well, you kind of missed the point. I'm not looking to sound like Stewart or Lee or Cocker or any of those guys. I'm just looking for something with A LITTLE BIT OF CHARACTER.Matt67 wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 3:39 pm I'm glad that's the case.

Is that asking too much?
And you still didn't answer the question. Why is this the case?

I have SoundID but I'm not talking about AI vocals. That's another subject and one that some people here have a HUGE problem with. I agree. AI vocals are well advanced over vocal plugins like Vocaloid. But the biggest complaint by those who don't like AI programs is that you still have to be able to sing. For people who can't sing, plugins like Synthesizer V are their only option.whyterabbyt wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 3:19 pm Tried slinging them through one of thae voice changer applications?

So you're saying companies are purposely not making voices with character because they don't want to step on the toes of singers like Joe Cocker? Tell me you're kidding? Do you really think these companies care if a singer gets pissed off because they made a vocal plugin with character?

Generic works better in terms of being usable for a wider variety of material, and thus more sales for the devs. They're not all bland though. Anri Arcane RDX has character, and is surprisingly versatile considering its anime aesthetic.
But it's also the market. That half-asleep breathy white female vocal style is everywhere, and the people using these voice technologies for their laptop electronica don't really want a Geddy Lee or Rod Stewart.

You just don't get it. What good would it do if a tool like that could mimic a certain “rough” voice, for example? Suddenly there would be 20 songs with, say, the same “rough” voice, or all with the same character. Is that what you want? Because that's exactly what would happen.wagtunes wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 3:49 pmSo you're saying companies are purposely not making voices with character because they don't want to step on the toes of singers like Joe Cocker? Except that's what you get with these vocal programs. They all sound the same. Every voice sounds the same. So what you're saying will happen is already happening.Matt67 wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 3:56 pmYou just don't get it. Thank you for at least answering my question. So it's the market. These breathy female voices are everywhere and that's what people want. So there is no need for a Geddy Lee or a Rod Stewart. There's no money in it.Vortifex wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 3:51 pm Generic works better in terms of being usable for a wider variety of material, and thus more sales for the devs. They're not all bland though. Pretty much what I figured but I just wanted to know what others thought.

So since it is ALREADY happening why not at least give us some voices that don't sound the same? There is no reason not to unless there is simply no demand for it and thus no money to be made from it.
And I thought you said you were out of this discussion.

A lot of great music can be made without bad AI or other vocal plugins.

Absolutely, but not the point of the question.Examigan wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 4:05 pm A lot of great music can be made without bad AI or other vocal plugins.
