Those are all good. But the TV show narrative would have to be a single scene or two, right? If the intention is to support/illustrate what's going on on screen, I mean.Wicker Man wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 8:26 am Some ideas for next month :
TV Theme - create a narrative of a TV show then compose a track to match

The High End of muzak
I don't record any instruments live, I construct my music.

How about music with an unusual time signature such as 5/4
It wasn't me! (well, actually, it probably was) - apparently no longer an 'elderly', now a 'senior'! Is that promotion?

I'm thinking sludge metal or shoegaze. The Noodlist wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 9:23 pmRick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up?beanpole wrote: Tue Apr 28, 2026 7:04 pm Choose a popular song from the 80's and everybody has to cover it in any style they want

Noone asked for it, but here's my short review of the entries:
Harvon - Muzak
Ominous sound. I imagine the one-armed man from Twin Peaks playing the piano in a datacenter. Oddly calming.
Shrikant - Airport Lounge
High stress level in this airport lounge. Dubai early April? This conveys the chaos of airports very well, but it doesn't help calm down the travellers.
Patrick9 - Musaka
Ahh, the latin rhythms, soft sounds, the meandering melody lines and modulations going nowhere in particular. This hits the spot. Bonus points for cheesy synth sax.
Hellfog - Level 1
The trumpet is a bit strident for muzak, but overall this definitely helps pass the time in the dentist's waiting room.
Beanpole - Eleven
Love the quirky keyboard sound that goes boink boink. Very credible early digital synth era muzak. I'd hold the line for many minutes listening to this.
Folderol - Elevator
Soothing stuff. The lush reverb is perhaps too celestial for Muzak - you should be aiming to keep the customer walking through the aisles, not to help them reach nirvana. Reminds me of Raymond Scotts music for babies. We played that for our children. Neither of them has become a delinquent, so I reckon it worked well enough.
Laguna Rising - Light Rain
Blandness and Laguna Rising don't mix, but the many twists and turns are smooth enough. Could be backing music for a slightly psychedelic TV show for children.
Wicker Man - Smooth Elevator
First impression: add Tracy Thorn's voice, and this would be straight out of EBTG's debut album. Gives off more modern, looped vibes later on. This and the flute sound highlights muzak's kinship to modern chill styles.

Always thought about doing Steptoe and Son or Grandstand.
The BBC Snooker theme (The Drag Racer, I think) would be my personal choice. Followed by Starsky and Hutch.
BTW, there's plenty of great cop themes.....Hill Street Blues is one I like.....

It's the piano I think, overdone, too much syncopation that changes it's pattern too frequently and humanitized to drag a bit. It's like a magnet that pulls mind away from other stimuli, increased concentration feels like calming.skipscada wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 9:17 am Harvon - Muzak

If the piano made no senses, it means not enough processing capacity.

Indeed. Many thanks for the reviews. We used to get quite a few of these at one time, but they just seemed to disappear.harvon wrote: Thu Apr 30, 2026 9:41 pmIt's the piano I think, overdone, too much syncopation that changes it's pattern too frequently and humanitized to drag a bit. I've tried doing them myself in the past, but found it very difficult and they didn't come out well.
P.S.
The 'hall of fame' got dropped years ago too
