With my years on Studio One I've got into the habit of having nested folders, e.g. "kick out" going to "kick" folder going to "drum" folder, or LH grunge guitar going to "grunge gtr" folder, going to "rhythm gtrs" going to "electrics" folder and just having the routing all working for me via the buses in the folder.

Cubase doesn't have that combined folder/bus concept and when I asked about it on the Cubase users forum I couldn't even get my point across at how useful this kind of thing is. I guess you don't miss what you've never had.

I decided that was enough of a showstopper to stop evaluating Cubase ...

I'd missed this (and it isn't relevant to Studio One/Pro anyway) but it just came to my attention that Cubase 15.0.20 (yup, a point, point release) introduced this feature so you can now have a folders track that is also a group channel (in Cubase parlance).

Think I'm going to have a sneaky peek at those Steinberg forums to see if people now realise what I meant and how useful it is!

So now 20 years after Reaper did this - this is something new in other daws?

Important part for me, is not that a group/bus is a folder too, it's if a folder behaves the same and is there in both arranger view as mixer.

A folder track can hold a bus and individual tracks as you please, just that it's there in mixer as well, to expand/collapse.
- would be a joy to have in every daw

Long ago running StudioOne 2.x I tried to implement some hardware too as a control surface, and it's just becomes complicated if a move one track and one channel in mixer is not the same.
- which is the case if folder tracks in arranger but not in mixer

Yup, it really surprised me when I demoed Cubase. I just assumed that the basic functionality of all DAWs (and I consider this basic functionality) would be the same.

Steinberg is copying a lot of Fender Studio Pro stuff into Cubendo. The speedy workflow of FSP is their USP. Cubendo has the advantage of having 'more tools', where FSP seems quite basic in comparison. Nice to see that they are listening to their customers. Steinberg used to be an arrogant company with a forum that was very unfriendly when you had some critisism or asked for a feature of other DAW's. A fanboys and fangirls only type of forum. But this has changed in recent years for the good.

But all DAW companies should copy good features of eachother. It is a competitive market after all and not a lot of new users to catch, so you have to seduce users from other DAW's with copying their favourite features. There is no shame in that. Have fun with the folder & bus option! Very useful for organizing 100 +tracks.

I think that companies overestimate the importance of 'new' and 'standout' features and underestimate the importance of having 'good' features' from other DAWs. Maybe they are stubborn, want to invent the wheel themselves, or don't want to be copycats because it makes them feel like a 'follower' instead of a 'trendsetter'. Who knows.

Maybe the cards will turn and I will jump back to Cubendo if Fender keeps producing lousy updates like the ones of the last 3 years.

It annoys me that fx channels can't be tucked into folders in the console.

In Reaper and Logic you can keep all related fx and aux tracks in the same folder as your instruments and audio tracks. Eg all drum processing together. I prefer it for keeping the mixer clean and focused.

Could you achieve similar results with Mixer Scenes?

You can do this but you need to create an automation track for the fx channel (e.g. volume). Then it appears in the arranger window and you can drag it into a folder.

Not esp elegant as you get an extra track in the arranger window (if you're not automating something) but worth it to keep the mixer organised.

I think version 8.1 will be centered around the release of motion 16 and motion 32. Maybe there will be some enhancements of the pattern editor. I would like euclidian lane support.

:D

True. And I am also eager to meet rompler nr. 5 named lo-fi acoustic dream zone, the brand new guitar tablature editor, auto punch through, 4 bugfixes and the highly anticipated new subscription plan called pay per session with none of our extensions.
