We now finally have at least one thing clear regarding Synth1...

That sucks! Synth1 is my favorite synthesizer and I wish it could live on forever, but there isn't even a VST3 version of it and modulating the parameters sometimes bugs out on Bitwig already. More bugs will get revealed the older it gets and one day no DAW will have VST2 support anymore, because it's already technically illegal to support that. On top of that Synth1 could really need an update with some more modern features, like a preset browser that is actually easy to use or MTS-ESP support for microtonal stuff, so I don't have to open Serum2 for every single thing that only uses basic waveforms anyway. BUT OK! If Ichiro Toda thinks that none of this matters, then I guess he's cool with Synth1 getting forgotten.

It is not illegal to support VST2, host vendors who acquired the VST2 SDK before Aug 2018 can still do it.

Correct, it's patch #9 in Ann Bank 3.Teksonik wrote: Thu Apr 30, 2026 11:42 am I invite everyone to try Ann Nolwenn's "Dark Choir" patch found in her third bank if I'm not mistaken. It sounds sampled it's so good. She did other great patches as well:

For synths with a fiddly preset widget, make a little cardboard box big enough for an optical mouse, and put a slice of styrofoam etc at each end to elevate the mouse. When the mousepointer is on the gui preset widget, lift it up and set it in the box, you can then use the buttons and scrollwheel without having it bumped off the widget
Lower that blood pressure
Tone2 Nanohost also has some preset facility, and makes Synth1 and others into a standalone instrument, should that be desired.

Thank you for sharing your view, but humans are natural speculators.Surgo wrote: Thu Apr 30, 2026 10:57 pm I think it's a little disrespectful to speculate over the reasons they might not want to release the code, especially around what they might or might not feel about it.

Thank you for the pursuit, though!EvilDragon wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 7:30 pm Some days ago on Surge Synth Team Discord server, @arturrembe reacted to one of my throwaway lines to somebody who was visiting Japan, "hey maybe you should go find if Ichiro Toda is still alive and ask him kindly if he would want to open source Synth1?".
arturrembe then e-mailed Hyakken of HY-Plugins with a polite expansion of my throwaway line. Hyakken said they'll try and respond back. I actually don't know if artur got that answer yet, but it doesn't matter necessarily because the story continues.
A few lines later, another one of SST members, nuoun, found a user on GitHub (eijis_pan) who according to Synth1 product page was the person who did the Mac port of Synth1, and also seemed quite active. So artur messaged eijis_pan similarly.
A day passed. eijis-pan replied:
彼は、ソースは公開しないと言っていました
"He said he wouldn't release the source."
And so there we have it. Sorry all for the bummer ending. I would be a terrible script writer!

Just about everyday. Its a sequencer. Does what it says on the tin.BONES wrote: Fri May 01, 2026 3:18 amSays the man who still uses Orion.Seafire Mk2 wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 8:17 pm Why would he? Why would anyone want it? It's a relic, doesn't come close to stuff available now
If it supported vst3 you'd probably still be using it.
Doesn't matter here. There isn't a single vst3 I'm interested in, and sequencing my hardware is unaffected.

And yet, you feel you can have a go at people using a softsynth that is as old as Orion. You don't see how that makes you a bit of a hypocrite? And yes, I probably am stupid enough that I'd still be using Orion if it wasn't for VST3 but I gotta tell ya, I am really glad that I was "forced" to make a change. There is no way I could go back to using Orion full-time, VST3 or not.
I also still use Orion, now and then, and you can hear Synth 1 on several tracks on our last album.

Forgive my ignorance here, but I can't seem to remember if Synth1 was inspired by something else. The original Nord Lead?
