It's a line array. By controlling vertical dispersion the output from a line line array drops off less the further you get away from it (theoretically -3db per doubling of the distance as oppsed to -6db for a regular speaker).
There's nothing new about this. Many of you must remember those hideous column speakers that seemed to be in every school hall - same principle.
As ever with bose a triumph of the ad agencies art rather than the speaker designers.

Why would I want to do that? I've told "Dr" Amar Bose to his face that he's a thieving snake oil salesman, who wouldn't know what a decent speaker sounded like if his life depended on it.

Hmmm. Looks (at a cursory glance) like a development of the Bessel Array. Phillips held the patent on that and did nothing with it for 25 years whilst making sure nobody else did.
