Music had a one night stand with sound design.....And the condom broke

Post

so, for those of us who arent going to watch a YT video just because somebody posted a link, what does the data really say about electronic music?
does it even say anything about the actual music?
An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

But hey, maybe actual discussion isnt a thing any more, just YT videos... here's a YT video as response to the YT video...

I did click on the link and saw the top comment (or at least it was at the top at the time):
Using the term ‘underground’ in a PowerPoint presentation about dance music marketing is a breathless indictment on just how soulless it’s all become.
I find it hard to disagree. And it helpfully lets you know how useful the video is overall because the fact that the goober in this video doesn't understand the distinction between electronic music and dance music is just ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Even from a music biz perspective, he just throws out various random stats that don't really fit together and it's real puddle-deep stuff like "growth in electronic music reach", which is based simply on the number of uploads tagged #DJSet. If I were paying this guy for insight, I'd want my money back.

Wow! Music sales are driven by fandom! Fans buy music!

I love The Dream Eaters.

That's all.

what stood out to me?

0. Music AI tool revenues up 651%, traditional music software revenues fell
1. physical sales were up and downloads had been declining for a whole decade
2. Sync grew fastest despite introduction of AI...counterintuitive and opposite of opinion on KVR
3. Youtube music grew more than apple and is catching it up...but streaming still a 1 car race
4. The only streamer taking a serious pro musician over AI stance is Deezer which is also the smallest, so negligible impact
4. majority of growth spurred by global south
5. Live music doubled its growth rate...but it was driven by higher ticket prices not more tickets sold
6. Major labels grew more than indies...reeks of control of streaming and taking control of udio and suno
7. EDM is centered around Germany
8. Hip hop is still number 1 everywhere but latin countries
10. USA is responsible for keeping "rock" globally relevant
11. More is spent monthly on live music than recorded music
12. 6% post own music to platforms, but only 5% purchased music making software
13. Techno & deep house are on a steady 6 yr decline...trap is still so dominant/relevant...& speed garage is fastest growing
14. As i suspected less zeitgeist and communal experiences..."fandom and consumption are fragmenting"

Well done mate, you got AI to try to summarise. I’m happy for you. But to quote Cory Doctorow: no-wants your Ai slop.
