Rick Beato is talking about the average statistics of big pop stars like Billie Eilish (Wikipedia details her early career support system). But there are other paths.

Internships, by and large, are unpaid. That's why the majority of those that take them have additional ways of of supporting themselves. Parents and / or grandparents, I would've thought.Constructed Identity wrote: Fri May 08, 2026 12:11 amNothing new about this. I when I lived with a friend in Yonkers, I looked into internships at studios (the major path to breaking into the industry) they are all unpaid in a city where the average rent in 4k a month. Similar in LA. Just paying for practice space in most cities is unattainable to most teens.

Well, I didn't. I had been evicted from my apartment in Seattle, drove across country and then didn't work so was homeless.Bunny_boy wrote: Fri May 08, 2026 7:21 amInternships, by and large, are unpaid. Curiously, from the Brave AI, it states that 60% of US internships are paid, whilst 60% of UK internships are unpaid or pay under the minimum wage. Of course that is literally just skimming the top lines of an AI generated output.Constructed Identity wrote: Fri May 08, 2026 1:41 pmWell, I didn't. A sound engineer in Paris explained to me a couple a years ago that music skill is not the most important aspect today but you must come from a wealthy family with good connections, lot of them are jewish.

We've been thinking a lot about going up to canada recently, and its more and more likely now that canada is making a pathway for healthcare workers to more easily immigrate in. (Family are healthcare workers, tech workers).TechHaus wrote: Thu May 07, 2026 5:15 am It's awesome that canada gives artists money to record.

Meanwhile here in the USA we cut funding to NPR and PBS and give military helicopter rides to Kid Rock.
Ive spent 50 years in the US, and I can confidently say its headed into the same dysfunctional, classist, dead-end oligarchy it has forced so many poor, 'global south' countries into in the last 100 years, since the original 'banana republics' of the late 18th century. Eventually all of this comes home to roost, and lately it just doesnt feel like a good place to have a family, maintain safety and security, plan for the future, etc. Meanwhile trumpist fascists in the state are literally claiming they will "come find you and kill you if you are unamerican", etc etc, out in the open. Anything to keep their dear leader from rotting in prison for pedophilia and rape I guess. Fun times.
Yeah canada may be it for us, but Carney... has been saying some troubling stuff also...
