Clearly the Admiral's quality doesn't extend to the user interface, it looks like a dog's breakfast. Ot perhaps a little more like a mad woman's washing. Whichever, it is quite off-putting, like a smartphone's home screen.

No, it's not. You can't sample anything with it. From the very beginning, "samplers" have been recording and playback devices. Kontakt is a sample based synth. It has filters, LFOs, envelopes, arpeggiators and all the rest of it. If Kontakt is not a synth, then neither is Serum or Vital or any other wavetable synth. Anyone who can't wrap their head around such an obvious concept is a clueless f**king idiot.

Pianoteq seems to be top tier going by this thread.

I don't really have any pianos except Numa player on my linux, but I installed a few freebies from buying interfaces like XLN studio grand and upright on my Mac. Obviously Pianoteq offers a lot more than these.

But I also just create piano-esque keys in Hive 2 for the most part. I have to see what the PIanoteq magic is all about.

Is an animal cracker a cracker, or a cookie, or a "biscuit" as they say in the uk?

Considering the word synthesizer obviously comes from the term synthetic, I would say it's hilarious on some level to claim that any "virtual" instrument isn't a synth. :hihi:

... or is it an actual animal? And it's not a biscuit just in the UK, it's pretty much the whole rest of the English speaking world that isn't the USA.

People on this forum seem to really sleep on The Usual Suspects, although maybe I’ll just choose one.

1. The Usual Suspects Nord 2x (the notch low pass is excellent. Super intuitive and gets wonky in a good way fast with fm, ring mod or sync. I’m convinced the fixed point math that it runs on the emulator, which programmers don’t even program in anymore and computers normally can’t run at all, truly has a sound quality other vsts don’t)

2. Gforce Ob-E (kind of a pain to program, but sounds so rich. I use this for big sounds, when you want it to be one of your only sounds).

3. Softube Model 84 Prophet 5 (Sound totally authentic to me. Their Juno is a close second here for raw sound, but feels too limited to make my top 4)

4. Gforce Oddity 3 -Arp Oddessy (I’ve played and Arp Axxe and always loved the gritty oscillators and nasally filter compared to the moog, and this sounds perfectly accurate to me. Sorta synth I can just get in and get a quick sound in for leads and always love the tone. Great filter to tweak).

Most of those are fairly classic-ish, basic-ish synths by today’s standards maybe, but I just love the sound, and sound and joy of programming comes first these days. Sure maybe in a different era vcv rack, or a mega “does it all (and still sounds great)” synth like zebra 3 or pigments would make the list (and I would like those two eventually), but for now those 4 above hit the spot perfectly.
