How difficult is it to swap CPUs?

If you want to move up to a faster processor and pick a CPU that is listed as compatible with your motherboard, is it basically just a matter of replacing the processor and replacing the thermal paste, or is there some sort of other steps and software that needs replacing?

Only thing I can think of is updating your motherboard's BIOS first, but I'd expect that's only necessary if the board was released before the (exact) CPU model you're looking at.
If you do need to update the BIOS and its settings go back to default, the only obvious change you'd need make from those factory defaults that I can think of is re-enabling XMP (or AMD equivalent) so your memory can run at its advertised speed.

If it's an AMD CPU, update the BIOS and the chipset driver.

If it's an Intel CPU, update the IME

and the BIOS; ROG STRIX Z590-E GAMING WIFI ?

That’s literally my MB. How did you know? This update is done after or before the CPU swap?Pictus wrote: Sun May 10, 2026 5:49 pm If it's an AMD CPU, update the BIOS and the chipset driver.

Also make sure the heat sink can handle the new cpu power dissipation. Else, upgrade that one also.

Its very annoying in my opinion, cleaning the crusted paste away etc. Which is why I take fastest CPU at the time of buying a new machine and then run it ~10 years
But it can be done. Most of the things have been said, but one thing: Does iLok get its protection up for this? I did not have iLok when I changed CPU back in 2000's.

More than that one thing; swapping the CPU may have implications for -everything- authorisation. Return licenses and deactivate what you can before you start.legendCNCD wrote: Tue May 12, 2026 9:23 am Most of the things have been said, but one thing: Does iLok get its protection up for this?
An idiot on Set Theory:

Yeah true, there might be some other than iLok, which will put its walls up..whyterabbyt wrote: Tue May 12, 2026 9:39 amMore than that one thing; swapping the CPU may have implications for -everything- authorisation.
