Agreed.

Time is money, things are getting more expensive everywhere, developers need to keep the lights on and food on the table.

I would much rather get asked to chip in 10 bucks for optional upgrades then get forced into some subscription scheme. I think I first bought that plug-in like 20 years ago at this point if not more. Zero complaints from me other than maybe the time limited nature of it. I didn't even hear about this upgrade until just now, and even if I got it email, I' probably just figured it was promotional and ignored it.

How does VW2 compare with other modern “glue” compressors? As good? Better? Just a different flavor?
It's always been more of a saturator with compression IMO, I still like it sometimes. I don't know if there's any reason to upgrade though, still works here. On the other hand $10 isn't any amount of money to worry about, won't even get you a meal at McDonalds around here.
I just tried it and it seems fine, so I'm not sure what I'd get out of upgrading, but it did sound good, and I guess it's not really a lot of cash. Just seems like they're asking for a handout.

Not sure how well they understand the meaning of "symbolic" as it's kind of insulting. I've heard it more often referred to as a "nominal fee". But I'd rather they be upfront about it and call it a maintenance fee.

It's an old plugin. An expensive old plugin. An expensive plugin that is still expensive, despite how old it is. They have made their money on this plugin many times over.

Everytime they have to spend hours updating it, that's money. Maintaining the product line? Money. Bug fixes? Money. Apple decides to change CPU's again? Money.

If you don't want to spend $10 on the upgrade. You don't have to.

Seems fair.

I’d have no problem with 10 bucks for improved stability and compatibility but it works fine for me in Ableton, haven’t tried in Bitwig.

I actually still use the v1 version you get along with v1 due to lower latency. I wish they lower the v2 latency.

I don’t think $10 is really anything to get worked up about on its own, but I do think the concern is more about the precedent it sets. The update itself seems pretty minor, and if they start charging for small incremental updates like this, it opens the door for their other plugins and other developers to do the same thing more often. This turns me off from wanting anymore PSP (I own most of ‘em) and now I’ll be less likely to support them in the future. Just my 2 cents. They don’t owe me anything and I don’t have to buy the upgrade.

I think I see what you did here, but I may be wrong and it's just coincidence....

Yeah this is pretty much where I'm at as well. I've been wanting VintageWarmer for a long time, and this just means that I'll wait for a lower price point to factor in the potential update costs- and that goes for other PSP plugins as well. If it never hits that price point, it just means I won't buy it. It's their choice and I get where it comes from, but it will impact my purchasing decisions.

I am a big supporter of PSP. Have them all and have used them all for two decades. I love how whenever I have a question or an issue Antoni himself responds. I really like this company and I don't think $10 is a big deal at all. What bothers me is that it's either $10 now or $15 later...???

Yep, this whole thing is a real shitmove.

First of all, it’s pretty cheeky to call a $10 or $15 charge a “symbolic” fee. Not everyone is wealthy or living a carefree life in the Western world. Fifteen dollars can be a lot of money in some countrys— and we all know it — it’s more than 95% of hobby musicians will ever earn from their music-streaming as income. :hihi:

Second, I think this is a terrible marketing and reputation mistake — a lot of people will now worry that every other PSP plugin will start charging a “symbolic” fee for bug fixes and never buy PSP again. (Hello Waves-WUP)

Oh, a "shitmove"....
Really??

This isn't the first time PSP has charged for a maintenance update. Maybe it's the first one a lot of people noticed because of how popular VW was.

There have been a few others IIRC, like one of the bus compressors and the meter. But not many out of the total portfolio.

Thanks for mentioning this, I thought I was going crazy - yeah I think I bought BussPressor, Triple Meter & Easyverb updates over the past few years that were this same-ish price

$10 maintenance fee for a plugin that has served me well and cost me nothing since buying it 17 years ago? Yeah, that's a no-brainer.
