Yes, and they still tour, and release albums! They're also really good! Don't listen to @ThoughtExperiment, he's obviously a curmudgeon.
Why is modern music so awful

ive never thought of pearl jam sounding similar to rem.
if someone said "i love rem, can you suggest a band i might like?" im sure there's a few id mention, long before pearl jam entered my mind.

I think Document is the most "rock" of their IRS albums, if that makes sense. Maybes Reckoning?TechHaus wrote: Thu May 14, 2026 9:47 pm Well there is "Monster" REM which is different from like Document REM.

Well, Michael Stipe was born 1960, so he's technically a gen jones/late boomer.vurt wrote: Thu May 14, 2026 9:32 pm ive never thought of pearl jam sounding similar to rem.

Meanwhile, Eddie Vedder was born 1964, so he's definitely gen jones.
So what did they have in common, including their bands?
In terms of the quality of time, they both grew up with Pluto in Virgo--call it the era--as a predominate aspect, and they both played to a gen X audience.
So, beyond this, how was their music similar?
Both of them shared a focus on political activism and social issues. Their lyrics, were kinda problem/critique oriented. Which got into mortality, environmental concerns, politics, cultural reform, etc. All very Virgo, service to mankind type themes.
So ... maybe their styles seem very different, but in terms of the kind of soul they brought, I see a lot of similarity.

Here's the thing, though, your lyrics don't determine you sound, musically, and REM have absolutely nothing at all in common with Peral Jam. They came from very different parts of the US - Georgia vs Seattle - and weren't really active at the same time. R.E.M's first album came out in 1983, Pearl Jam's wasn't until 1991. Sure, there was plenty of overlap but what inspired each band, musically, was from very different eras.
I'd go further and suggest that they are absolutely nothing alike, beyond being guitar bands, and anyone who thinks they in any way similar is a clueless idiot.vurt wrote: Thu May 14, 2026 9:32 pmive never thought of pearl jam sounding similar to rem.

REM had more UK sensibilities somehow. I know they toured with Gang of Four and the English Beat a lot early on in their career, and then later had early Radiohead opening for them.

Yeah not gonna call anyone an idiot but I really don't see many similarities there.
Closer would be REM and early Radiohead and even that is a terrible comparison

Music got bad in like the early 2000's when Daft Punk and Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs came out, etc.
Not saying that music is particularly bad, but it led to ALL music being bad.
(just felt like transitioning the convo out of REM/Pearl Jam)
