I consider Algoritm to be the best software FM synth available.Artie Fichelle wrote: Fri May 15, 2026 4:20 pm A very good upgrade, and never forget, that reason has some of the best instruments in the industry: europe, algoritm and objekt, the latter can produce incredible sax sounds, no one would believe.
Reason 14 coming - DAW improvements!

Even the age old Thor is incredible - too small GUI* nonwithstanding, easily one of the best synths ever imo, be it hard or software.
*If you could set the zoom factor for the Rack independently as many request these days,
I bet Thor would gain a whole new fan-base.

I find the update-price very REASONable.
Sticked with V12 and never evolved so this was a must. Now I´m willing to invest some time to grow my skills and muscle memory. Feeling at home in Bitwig and am missing the modulation possibilities it offers.
Guess I will get somewhere.
THX!

Yes, I wish they’d update Thor’s GUI. They already did it for the iPad version which was a joy to use, sadly discontinued now.jens wrote: Fri May 15, 2026 6:20 pm Even the age old Thor is incredible - too small GUI* nonwithstanding, easily one of the best synths ever imo, be it hard or software.

Damn, I hope you don't have closer to 1000 plugins like I have. If that's the case you must have been tagging 24 hours a day since releasesQeetz wrote: Sat May 16, 2026 2:34 am I've finally managed to fully tag my plugins. I purchased Reason 12 when it was released, but never liked the workflow, so didn't bother using it.
When I saw what Reason 14 offered, it just made a lot of sense to me that they focused on the messy and convoluted workflow it used to have in previous versions. So, I purchased the Upgrade from R12 to R14, and I'm excited, and looking forward to use R14 both as a standalone DAW, and as a VST3 Plugin in my other DAWs.

I tagged the Rack Extensions as Rack Extensions and the VST plugins as VST plugins, before I realized I could easily just turn off the visibility of one type or the other in the hamburger menusQeetz wrote: Sat May 16, 2026 4:26 amMore like 350something.... was still a lot of workstarflakeprj wrote: Sat May 16, 2026 3:33 amDamn, I hope you don't have closer to 1000 plugins like I have. I had to simplify the way I like to categorize stuff a lot in order not to have half the browser occupied by tags, but it seems to work nice enough for now

Reason is a package of instruments and a daw. It's not a strong daw, yet. That leaves the instruments. The synths are decent, mostly light-weight, not really on par with the best available soft synths today. The modeled instruments just aren't very good. The very old sampled instruments are far behind the times. That doesn't leave much on the bone for people who already own a lot of software instruments, likely of better caliber, and it doesn't make Reason very attractive for new users. The weakest area by far is acoustic sampled/modeled instruments. If Reason gets some solid bread and butter sounds and gets more filled out as a daw, that would do a lot for making it a more attractive package.jens wrote: Tue May 12, 2026 2:52 pmWell, reason is my main host and I'm making indie-rock/-pop and - drums aside - as such I have a very limited interest in software-instruments - but when it comes to it, conventional sample-libraries are the least I would have any interest or use for whatsoever - so there's that. (Personally I typically much rather prefer to record real instruments instead.)sellyoursoul wrote: Tue May 12, 2026 2:33 am Some may disagree, but if you ask me, Reason is too heavily weighted toward assembling electronic music, sorely lacking in sampled acoustic instruments and means to effectively play them. There isn't even a basic velocity curve editor built in, much less other things needed for really dialing in playing response for keys and drums. Personally, I want a good mix of both acoustic and electronic instruments, but if Reason is involved, it's a rack for light cpu synths only running in Reaper. But between U-he and Arturia synths, I'm rarely opening Reason anymore for even synths.
For drums I use Superior Drummer 3 and there is a zero point zero chance that a conventional sampler would ever cut it for me.
Not sure what you mean with velocity curve editor though in regards to samplers tbh
- I only know it as a setting for MIDI-controllers and for synth parameter control (for filters and such) - what exactly would a velocity curve editor do in a multi-gig sample-library?
When it comes to emulating acoustic instruments, the Reason crew obviously prefers physical modelling rather that huge sample libraries these days by the way. If the latter is your thing and you want to use Reason as your DAW then I'd much rather recommend looking at 3rd party plugins instead - plenty to choose from. By I have a feeling Reason isn't really for you either way.
A velocity curve editor is pretty standard in samplers, keys instruments, and drums instruments. It's a little embarassing that Reason doesn't have one.

You just quoted me saying that Reason is my main DAW and that I don't really have much interest in the instruments.sellyoursoul wrote: Sat May 16, 2026 11:00 pm

Don't quote people if you either don't read or don't comprehend what you quote.
Also - despite me asking - you still didn't explain what you mean with "velocity curve editor" in regards to sample libraries. You have my full attention.
No, it isn't.sellyoursoul wrote: Sat May 16, 2026 11:00 pm A velocity curve editor is pretty standard in samplers, keys instruments, and drums instruments. It's a little embarassing that Reason doesn't have one.

What you're missing is that Reason isn't all about you. Most users are using Reason as a package of instruments and a daw, obviously.jens wrote: Sun May 17, 2026 12:27 amYou just quoted me saying that Reason is my main DAW and that I don't really have much interest in the instruments.sellyoursoul wrote: Sat May 16, 2026 11:00 pm

I don't know what to tell you on the velocity curve editor. Maybe you just don't use very many virtual instruments and don't know what is standard.
