Are there any Desaturator vst`s that remove as much harmonic content from the sound as needed?

Sonible's "entropy:EQ+" might work for you.

EQ+ seems mainly about selecting transient types.

I guess we have to ask iZotope to do something about it, and wait a bit.
These algorithms in ozone that can pick drums or vocals from a full mix, probably can be tuned also to grab the most relevant harmonics within a complex signal. But they would have to work on that in very detailed ways, because different instruments are playing together, and should not cancel out each other's characteristics, and also when the algorithms grab some harmonic frequencies from the loudest instrument, what about the next one that plays the same note contained in a polyphonic chord, this note might get weakened etc..

Post

Entropy won't do that but smart EQ2 identifies resonances and could be helpful depending on the source material. Second is TDR Nova GE wich has an analyser mode for spectral issues.

How do you distinguish between the first harmonic and a second voice playing an octave above?

Have you tried any of these? You get the eq to track the frequencies of the harmonics of the instrument.

Thanks everyone! Plenty of options

Waking a sleeping thread to say thanks for this suggestion. I've keep MCharacter installed for quite some time but had only used it occasionally only occasionally to synthesize more harmonics... it turns out to be exactly what I needed for a little cleanup on a track I'm working on.

(I should say, semi-cleanup. I don't want it pristine and I don't think this tool would have gotten there without taking away all the shine from it, but I softened it up a bit so it's less harsh.)
