How does this Compyfox pack sound? https://u-he.com/PatchLib/satin.html

I'm on Linux so Satin is my main tape echo. I guess I could try Audiothing's, but I will probably just get a real Roland again at some point.

I tried a Boss RE-20 for a bit and found it abhorrent, and was shocked that some heavy hitter players used it live...but I guess it was ok if you weren't comparing it to the thing it was meant to be compared to.

I have not used a Roland Tape echo since 1983 but for me most similar dark dub sounds are fine with the free DelaySon.

TAL Dub-X is probably worth a look, considering the availability of Linux builds, the exceedingly reasonable price, and how good it actually is (with the same caveat that it doesn't come with a built-in reverb).

I have several emulations and I am always coming back to Modnetic from Surreal Machines. It sounds best to me. I like how the feedback fades out and it puts most other emulations to shame regarding the amount and quality of presets. And I haven’t found another tape emu that sounds this close to the Basic Channel / Maurizio / Rhythm and Sound „sound“. That doesn’t mean that the other ones sound bad but I like this one the most.
