Reaper: Recording MIDI even while track isn't armed

I've just noticed this is happening, and I don't know why. I haven't made any changes to preferences, options, or settings. But when I have a track selected, even if it isn't armed, it will record midi data if I touch the midi controller/play notes. How do I stop this? It's never done this before. I'm trying to edit a drum part, and it makes it very difficult to try out parts because it just records everything I'm playing even when I don't want it to. Thanks

Retrospecive recording it's called in some daws, look for that.
- usually as arm for recording somewhere
And I would also check "autoarm selected track" if something like that is active.
- been default on some daws I used
