Chris Bryant has released another inspiring tool for ambient and soundscape music called Texture Loom https://s1gnsofl1fe.gumroad.com/l/textu ... ut=profile This is a free/pay-what-you-want instrument that follows up the gorgeous SOL reverb effect that was a collaboration with Dawesome Music. Rather than me trying to describe it, here's a direct quote from his site:

"Texture Loom is a free dual-sample atmosphere engine by S1gns Of L1fe, designed for creating evolving pads, drones, cinematic beds, textural layers, and ambient movement from your own audio.

Load two samples, blend between them, shape them with filtering and motion, then send the result into an onboard space/reverb section. Texture Loom is simple enough to start making sound immediately, but flexible enough for slow-burning sound design, generative ambience, and deep sample-based texture work.

Originally built as a Max for Live device, Texture Loom now also includes a native plugin version so it can live outside Ableton while keeping the same visual identity and workflow.

What It Does

Dual-sample playback engine

Load your own audio into Sample A and Sample B

Start/Stop, Reverse, Start position, Level, Pan, and Rate controls

RATE / SEMI mode for continuous speed control or semitone-based pitch movement

Equal-power A/B blend control

Blend LFO for slow crossfading motion

Multimode filter with Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass, Notch, Peak, and Allpass

Filter cutoff, resonance, drive, and LFO modulation depth controls

Two Motion LFOs with multiple shapes: Sine, Triangle, Ramp Up, Ramp Down, Random, Drift, and Glider

Motion destinations for Blend, Filter, Space, Sample A Start, and Sample B Speed

Onboard stereo space/reverb section with Size, Decay, Mix, and Width

Master output with metering

INIT button for returning to a clean blank state"

Needless to say, if you get some decent use out of it, please consider supporting him. He's one of the creators in the scene that is constantly using his platform and reach, to make a positive impact. Not only does he share some excellent production techniques, but he also addresses the psychological aspects of being a musician.

The information is solid, and his motives genuinely seem to be pure. He's a great communicator, and I've learned plenty because of that. So go download Texture Loom, and his other plugins and M4L devices. I'm about to load it up in Logic right now. Peace & Hair Grease!! :tu:

Thank you for sharing, my friend!

This is just the beginning for Texture Loom. I already have a pretty good list of features I’d like to add in the first update, and I’m excited to keep building on it.

I’m offering it for free as a way to support the producer community that has supported me over the years. I hope you all enjoy it, and there’s definitely more to come! :tu:

There doesn't seem to be a way to actually play this with a keyboard controller. So once you start it, it runs continuously until you press the start/stop button. Outside of sampling the playback and then loading it into a sampler, I don't see much practical use for this as far as musical composition. Or am I mussing something?

Post

That seems to be it. It's for making ambient music. I also don't see much use for musical composition but it's super pleasant to listen to.

How do you make music with something you can't control?

Anyway, I created an audio track, fed this thing into it, and recorded about 3 minutes, I manually adjust the parameters real time so I did get something interesting out of it. And with some additional sounds, I can get an ambient track out of it. It's just a half assed way of going about it.

I think you answered your own question there 😀
There are plenty of examples of music which allow some degree of chance in their construction. Plus, Ambient music in particular is often more about the sounds than the notes.

Plus FWIW I agree with the OP that Chris is a genuinely nice guy, and this (free) plugin will have been released with the best of intentions.

Downloaded and tested it, a very nice plugin for quickly making textures of all kinds -- sure this could be done with the right plugin chain but hey it's nice someone made something like this.

Currently, toggling the "Start/Stop" button is the only way to start and stop the samples. In the next update, I'm going to tie those buttons to transport start and stop but the question is... would you like the sound to trail off or just stop?

I've also got a whole laundry list of features for the future such as sample recording, presets, etc. but one thing at a time. That said, I appreciate you guys checking it out! :phones:

Don't bother with transport just make it respond to a MIDI CC or note values. MIDI note numbers 0 to 20 and 109 to 127 are not assigned to the standard 88 keys used in a Piano.

If you used one of those values you could sequence the stops and starts while leaving everything else running

So a note on message for note #1 would start it and a note off for note #2 would stop it while not starting or stopping anything in the DAW. Could also be easily mailed to a controller where something like that extra drum pad could easily be programmed as a toggle switch to start and stop it

We're looking for it to be playable. However, don't do it on account of us, we're not the target audience.

So pitch tracked and note on/off behavior? That's also something I can consider. As for the target audience, of course you are! I've got nothing but respect for you and JRR shop Uncle E.

Good stuff, S1gns. Thanks for putting this out there.

This is deceptively simple. Very nice results just throwing some random stuff together and tweaking. Great stuff!
