Hi all

Hope this is the right forum, but just want to se if any of you Kvr-ers have had this particular problem.

Ok..here goes...

I was browsing fine with IE ( win98 system) and then got a virus that redirects your home page to something else. From then on, whenever I clicked on IE, nothing happens. It goes busy, then the curser arrow comes back. However I found by simply opening a folder, I can go to favorites on the menu, and I am able to get on-line that way ( I am doing that now)

I was able to get rid of the re-directing bug by following directions on the net. Got SpywareBlaster and AVast installed and running. However, still have the bug of not being able to run IE from the desktop.

i tried installing Netscape and Mozilla. The same thing happens whenever I click on the icons...busy, then I get back the curser, but the application does not run.

Going alt-cntl-delete shows the programs running however..ahgghh!

While I can still browse, it is buggy..clicking on a link sometimes does not work as it's trying to open a new window in IE, but IE does not want to run.

any suggestions?

Tim

I suggest (www) LavaSoft (dot com) Ad-Aware SE personal edition, run a "deep scan".

My PCs at home and office were once riddled with all sorts of nonsense that certainly messed up my browsing experienced.

2 programs that I think are essential for clean-up are HijackThis and Spybot Search & Destroy. Plus you need to adjust your browser settings so you don't get pooh on your PC anymore.

I highly recommend the Opera Browser. Not free but worth every penny in my opinion.

Aside from that I agree using Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware should fix the problem.

The first time I ran spybot it found 81 problems (and it fixed an IE problem I had been having.

When I upgraded to the new version of adaware it found a load of things that the old version never found.

These are very good.

I second that, IMHO Opera is fantastic... make the switch & you won't be sorry! :)

A) Get Spybot Search and Destroy, run it.
B) Get Adaware and run it.
C) Get HijackThis and run it.

Those three should be able to fix your IE issues.
Still:

D) Get Firefox (a Mozilla variant), install it and use it from now on.

Sorry for the absense of any links, Google should find them in seconds.
Oh, before I forget: They're all free.

I tried Opera once (admittedly quite some time ago) and didn't like it too much. Yes, it was faster than the others, but several things didn't seem to work back then (resuming downloads, integrating GetRight, integrating Outlook Express). Maybe it has changed since then...

opera has it's own mailclient integrates with stardownloader resumes downloads and except default margin (which has to be specified in style) displays standard pages as expected.

And when you're there, get thunderbird as well

But personally I just don't want to use either of the two.

Thanks for all the help

However, when i installed SpyBot,it scanned my system, then it said it had to reboot becuase it could not fix some files.. When it did I could not get back to my desktop. Fatal error with explorer exe

Had to install XP from scratch, and so now i think its better..no problem opening browsers...just have to update everything. :?

While you have a fresh instal freshly updated, get Ghost, or drive image, and mirror your boot HD. Next time something major like this happens, you can be up and running in about 10 minutes...As opposed to days!
Do it, you'll thank me later.
