As seen live on Rush's opening night at the Forum in LA (with another in the rack, two TONEX Pedals for his amp tones!) - Alex Lifeson's pedalboard:

so his tone is a copy of his tone?

"Did you get the picture? Cool, roll the amp back over, please"

Alex must love his guitar tech, all he has to schlep around is a pedal board and a couple of guitars.

is there a difference?
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

Good one, even though obviously the amp wouldn't be in the picture even if there was one :)

He does bring quite a few guitars, but more pertinent to his use of digital tones is what he mentioned in the Rick Beato interview: He is able to use very accurate captures of the actual amp tones from each song/album/era instead of an approximation of each from a few actual amps.

Yeah, that's definitely huge for someone who wants to accurately represent a plethora of tones without a truckful of amps. Capture tech is really amazing these days. Not that it wasn't "good enough" before the last year or two.

That last sentence is definitely fair, too. I enjoyed his tone every time I've seen them since the Signals tour. Recently he talked about switching guitar brands for different eras, and I think that plus the amps used, and the rest of his signal chain was very consciously thought out in order for him to get the best results (and during some of the 80s/90s synth-era work to be heard at all!).
