probably because they wanted to express it using words.
and that's OK, but BONES passing it off as not having real emotional impact without lyrics is what pisses me off the most.

Technically, and the lyrics can be part of the music too. It's entirely about what the performer thinks about it. (afaik), certain genres sometimes have lyrics, some don't use lyrics at all, and some typically use them in every song. (I actually like lyrics in music, but I also like instrumental songs too)

the beatles wrote ""flying" and it has no words, it might be their only instrumental "song"
what is that song about, is it a love song? a song for pilots? a song about marijuana?

if the song tells the story then "flying" would only be about one thing?

if the song tells the story then everyone who listens to the song will come to the same conclusion of what the song is about

with lyrics, sure some may interpret it too in many ways but a lot songwriters don't set out to be cryptic?

for example, the lyrics "squeeze my lemons till the juices run down my legs" is not very cryptic

and to be fair if it's instrumental it's mainly about the listener's imagination.
