EDIT: Ok I've got them working now. I must have installed an older version at some point and that was causing a conflict.

That's pretty cool.Teksonik wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 8:41 pm As long as we're taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane, I found some old issues of the Transoniq Hacker. This one is from June 1989 and takes me back to the old days when information travelled at a snail's pace through the mail and a single patch could get you excited.....![]()
Sam Mims was a bit of a legend back in the day at least in Vegas. He runs a vintage synth and parts shop in Texas now and has a YouTube channel. Here he discusses the four patches above:

The problem was in case anyone else runs into it is they appeared to have changed the MDV-II's plugin name but not the plugin ID number.N 4 LIFE wrote: Tue Jun 23, 2026 7:35 amgot it working very quickly hereTeksonik wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 6:09 pmMust be an issue with this system then. EDIT: Ok I've got them working now. I must have installed an older version at some point and that was causing a conflict.
I had version 0.1.4 installed and the new version is 0.6.0 and the plugin databases in both DAWs were looking for a plugin named "Temecula MDV-II" but couldn't find it as the new name is just MDV-II (which is much better). I had to clear out the old entries in the databases, do another scan and then everything worked. The same thing happened on my studio computer this morning on Win 11. The plugins installed fine it was just the name change that confused the plugin databases in both DAWs.
Anyway I like the Temecula reverbs on drums but much prefer the ESQ-1's built in reverbs.
I used to run my hardware ESQ through a Yamaha SPX-90 which I still own but never power up however I have the feeling I'd still prefer Cherry Audio's reverbs to it although I'd be happy to see someone emulate the SPX-90 just for nostalgia's sake.

*Old man reminiscing mode On*
Those were such wonderful times. We experienced an amazing quantum leap in technology in the mid 80's just like we have experienced such a leap in the last 25 years with soft synths and "in the box" production.
I'm very grateful to have been a part of both revolutions.

I would love an SPX-90 plugin. The "Symphonic" chorus effect on it just sounded so awesome on 1980s digital synths.Teksonik wrote: Tue Jun 23, 2026 3:46 pmThe problem was in case anyone else runs into it is they appeared to have changed the MDV-II's plugin name but not the plugin ID number.N 4 LIFE wrote: Tue Jun 23, 2026 7:35 amgot it working very quickly hereTeksonik wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2026 6:09 pmMust be an issue with this system then. The Neyrinck "V-90 Symphonic" plugin however does an AMAZING job of emulating the SPX-90 Symphonic effect, including its 31.25 kHz sample rate and 12 kHz bandwidth. And just sounds amazing on plugins that emulate 1980s digital Synths like the ESQ-1. It's a one trick pony and it costs $50 but sounds so incredibly awesome on my DX7, D50, ESQ-1, and other similar plugins I reach for it often

You say it does a great job of emulating the SPX-90 Symphonic effect but is it better than any other current option?
Off the top of my head I can't think of another standalone symphonic effect at least not in my collection.

Overloud's Modula is another one that does the Symphonic effect.
As for the rest of the SPX90, it's really not worth modelling imo. I dug out mine (SPX50D, which is the SPX90 without the sampler but with some terrible digital distortion effects) some months back to reacquaint myself with it. The front end is pretty bad, so it makes the "analog style" FX like EQ, compressor, gate etc more or less unusable (same I thought even back then). The reverbs are metallic and not great (I loved them back in 1988 but that was the only reverb box I had), delays can be had with any of half a million delay plugins. I used to like the Pitch Shift C algorithm doing the micropitch thing, but again, there are better tools for this, and the rest of the pitch shifters are pretty bad.
Honestly, I get that people want plugins of everything, but for some things, thought the SPX90 was groundbreaking at the time, time has moved on - significantly - and it hasn't really aged well, imo.

The only other one I am aware of is the one in Valhalla Space Modulator. It has lots of different algorithms but one of them is Symphonic Chorus.Teksonik wrote: Tue Jun 23, 2026 6:29 pmThanks but it requires iLok so that's me out.IvyBirds wrote: Tue Jun 23, 2026 5:28 pm The Neyrinck "V-90 Symphonic" plugin however does an AMAZING job of emulating the SPX-90 Symphonic effect![]()

That one is free and no iLok. Sean did an awesome job with the plugin. Everyone should have it
It's Symphonic chorus effect sounds awesome but it's modern, clean, and hifi. Sounds amazingly close to the Symphonic chorus Yamaha has in my Montage. It doesn't have that 1980s sample rate and low bit depth grittiness like SPX-90 however
That might matter as much when you feed it synth emulations that already have some 80s grit
I like to run Valhalla Space Modulator in series with a plugin called LO-FI-AF by Unfiltered Audio to add in some digital artifacts, color, and even more grittiness. TAL DAC is another good choice

The Transoniq Hacker article was a good read. I enjoyed the reference to SINPAD which is actually one of my top favorite patches over the years of playing. Will be nice to be using that one again.
I noticed the VST can change the selected sample while playing. Is this an added feature in the VST? I can't remember which patches did this but the OSC sample would change as you played.

maybe a stupid question but can't you do iLok totally online with no dongles now?Teksonik wrote: Tue Jun 23, 2026 6:29 pmThanks but it requires iLok so that's me out.IvyBirds wrote: Tue Jun 23, 2026 5:28 pm The Neyrinck "V-90 Symphonic" plugin however does an AMAZING job of emulating the SPX-90 Symphonic effect![]()

Really? In my Space Modulator VALHALLA PRESETS, I have: Chorus/Spatial Chorus, Symphonic Flanger, RandomishChorus, Deep Chorus, A Flanging Forest, Fast Rotary, Detuned Chorus and Wide Chorus.
Detuned Chorus sounds wonderful, carefully applied – might that be the preset you're referring to?

If it were easy, anybody could do it!

So do imported ESQ-1 sysex in Arturia SQ80 V sound the same as Cherry Audio ESQ-1?
