Anybody know of any existing libraries that address this colour in the horn-section rainbow?

You could almost 'make do' with normal brass, but they're always processed to perfection, and a good Motown-style track needs more edge. :D From what I know of Studiophonik and Kick-Ass Brass, these will still not meet this need.

I don't mind taking a stab at mapping it for myself in Wusik or .sfz if it's just a multisample disc (ie. with no included engine) if the price is right.

Regardless, I'd be curious to see what options there are at ANY price, even if it's something out of my reach.

when you find it, let me know!
seriously, brass in this area is sorely lacking.

I can't believe there's not ONE sample site that hasn't addressed this need yet. I bet it'd be a hot seller! This kind of brass is used in all kinds of music!!

:D

My "Midnight Hour" is on a 2-disc Motown + R&B collection called "Respect: Sounds of the Soul Generation".

All killer, no filler. Even "Brick House" has grown on me. Say... has decent horns, too!

Do a search at soundsonline.com for 'horns'.
One result that seems like it might be what you want is Killer Horns cd:

Or maybe Phantom Horns at the same site?

Cheers, db, that's right up my alley. Also noticed this one: click me, which seems to be a 'lite' version, featuring the Phantom Horns.

I could swear that when I looked on soundsonline a few months ago that they had
a cd called Downtown Horns; but there was no sign of it now. :?

Had a listen to that Phantom Horns lite one you mentioned. (Pro Sounds?). Their mp3 sounded like Tower of Power doing 'What is Hip?' funk thang. For $50, you're not out that much compared to the full PH version for $200.

Get down onyo' bad self! Good gawd 'yall!

Anybody tried the "Crimson, Blue & Fabulous" set from Sony? It's billed as "horncraft for R&B". Good referral on the Memphis Horns CD.

I've had some good luck with "Chronic Horns Vol 2" from bigfishaudio.com. It's not the holy grail of horns, but there are some good things in this library.

this has to be the real deal

just listen to the Otis Redding box set for an appreciation of what these guys can do

'Try a little tenderness' alone is a horn gem -- the arrangement and the blend in the intro sets the table for the song

many many gems on that box set and these guys had much to do with it

Memphis Horns are really great (don't know about the sample CD).

These guys (sax&trumpet + dublings) play on many of my fav tracks (remember Sting/s Mercury Falling album?)

"on the Jazz tip" cd has many trumpet and saxsamples. I put them in the fruity-slicer to make new lines/stabs etc. Some free soundfonts arent too bad either (with enough fx) .I was very dissapointed with 'Liquid Sax' (vsti)
