I've been using Microtonic lately, and I'm really enjoying the sound quality. However, there's one thing that's slowing down my workflow: as far as I can tell, there's no obvious way to simply click on a drum channel (kick, snare, hi-hat, etc.) and audition that individual sound instantly while trying to create a beat... or am I missing something?

I use FL Studio, and the only way I`ve found out to hear the sounds so far is by pressing its Play buttom (which plays drumbeats in loop) or through the Piano roll.
The drums are mapped from C1 up to G1, so if FL gives you a keyboard 'keyboard' you can use that or a MIDI keyboard. You can also just press the buttons at the top which say "1 c", 2 c#" to preview the sounds.

Ah, now I see my mistake. I once tried to press those top buttoms, but now I realize you have to press each twice to make them produce a sound.

Thanx, you saved the day.

If there is something like that among FL Studio's native plugins, that would be great, but I'm also open to third-party plugins.
I know the classic drum machines like the 808, and all that stuff, but I`m looking for something beyond that, so to speak.

Any suggestions? Thanx in advance.
Two things: FM drums are easy to make with free VSTs; use samples in FPC and put a bit reducer on the channel- change settings as desired
I also have FM drums with the digital OSC in my Prologue, but that is not what you asked
