Looking back, music was my identity, an ego thing. Also limited funds meant I needed to be picky when buying my 1-2 albums a week (depending on how much money was left after Friday night), plus there was limited exposure to all the music that was available. I was mainly into prog rock, hard rock, psychedelic, electronic, ambient and fusion.

Now that I can put the ego aside, I like pretty much everything. It's the sound of musical instruments I like, and I find most songs have them in it. When I listen to something new, I search for the bits I like and focus around that. Pretty much the opposite of my beginnings, where a song was dismissed as soon as it did something I didn't like.

I like to think there are no bands, just the music of the human race.
Same here. I don't care what people think about what I like. But when I was young and growing up, there were bands that I was embarrassed to admit I liked (like the Bee Gees). Now that I'm older, I can totally respect the immense talent of some of these artists.
I have regrets that it took me so long, I missed out on going to concerts of some of the greatest in their prime, but it's nice ride going back through all those old bands and rediscovering them.

My daughter keeps showing me loads the latest music, I've been listening to a lot of that, it keeps it feeling fresh.

The fact that people are no longer as sectarian is a good thing; still, I do think that, with the exception of some pockets of die-hard music lovers, music has sort of become a bit beige.

I mean, what was the last "indie" band or artist with any recognition? I struggle to think of anybody past Alt-J, James Blake, The xx and that sort of thing, and that was over a decade ago. And they already were kind of forgettable (and in fact they have been forgotten, basically, because they had very little going on apart from their debut albums).

Also, the "left-fieldness" of acts like The Knife has sort of disappeared. Angine de Poutine are like the only exception, and they're more of a gimmick than anything else.

Me? I listen to a bit of everything; I had my phases (punk, post-punk, goth and metal as a kid, electronic music a bit older) and I think most people outgrow them at a certain point, but I'm not seeing today's kids having any sort of passion really.

That's what happens with a perfectionist approach ie: over quantization, auto tuning and getting too many involved in the production of a song.

In an era where anybody can be a YouTube star, it's suicide to be too clever for the sole purpose of standing out. You gotta be down to earth and relatable because jealousy is a nasty beast.

Many do have passion they just aren't impressed with having any need to be acknowledged like yesterday's rock star. It's silly. Many of today's kids enjoy creating the music with or without A.I. and are content with playing them exclusively through their earbuds not giving a f**k if johnny next door approves or not. I respect that one hundred percent.

I meant more the listener's passion, more than the creator's. I have no trouble believing that kids are making music these days (less with guitars, more with computers probably), but the general population takes music for granted a bit, I think.

I think there is more to find these days

as usual, you do have to poke around to find the good stuff, but it's still out there to be found

I hate music. It's annoying and agitating (ie: grunge). I just like good songs.

I started out getting just insanely into Aenima by Tool and The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails. I can sort of see now that everything I got into later has just spiraled out from these two obsessions. I started off being really into rock/metal, did a foray into experimental electronic, and then back to rock/metal. I have a really hard time getting excited about synths or sound design anymore...I really appreciate the songwriting that ends up happening when you just pick up an instrument and go.

With that said, I would say the central pillars of my taste have been formed by (not counting the above two) The Cure, Irepress, Burial, Alcest, ISIS, Ben Frost, Tycho, Meshuggah, Sumac, Swans...and a lot of soundtracks, probably. I really like the stuff Clint Mansell and Geoff Barrow/Ben Salisbury do. I'm also a big sucker for synthwave/synthpop and kind of general 80's nostalgia music (that ends up sounding nothing like actual 80's music). No specific artists, just those vibes.

Nice, Trent Reznor is pretty great, even though I don't listen to NIN music very often

I grew up in studios and tour buses and learned early on to appreciate all genres. You get a different appreciation for things when you see the process and skills behind it up close. That said, if I were to open my media player right now I'd most likely go for drum and bass or metal. It's very much a mood thing. Tomorrow it could be something else.

Very open minded!
