Why bother?

I am sincerely interested in the perspectives of others who might have been stymied by a sense of futility, transitoriness, or insignificance, but who have worked through that mentally and kept on going, whether in music or other arts.
Sometimes I feel outside of things, and I don't know what to do with the rest of my life.

The only thing that works for me is meditation. It's not even a case of 'regaining perspective' for me, it's just a relief to shut the brain down for a while but it's surprisingly difficult to literally 'not think'. It's difficult but it can be learned. Some Tai Chi techniques can give you a way in, by enabling you to think only of the movements.
Hope you can find something that helps.

I hear you. Struggling with meaning doesn't impact me a lot because of my faith, but I understand insignificance much more clearly now at age 58.5 than ever before. We are designed to explore both inner and outer realms—music, art, and literature help us into the minds of others. Embrace those experiences, and know that some days are more revelatory than others. It doesn't matter if others are watching, approve, or encourage you. When the day comes that you marvel that there's a floor beneath you to walk on, rather than nothing, call that a good day. If the night's moon invokes similar recognition, all the better.
Just be honest with yourself; get any/all spiritual priorities sorted first. Many endeavors feel small because they really are small. Mark 8:36 says, "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?"

If you're feeling lost in life then the best thing you can do today is to volunteer at a local charity that means something to you. A homeless shelter, mental health outreach, elderly care, animal rescue, teaching kids music. There is no shortage of options. You will meet new people, be valued, and gain better perspectives on life and what really matters.
