I could tell you a lot but you simply need to hear it. Give it a try. The Beta is free.

I modeled eight voice cards from my old Jupiter-8 down to the DAC scan noise, put a BigSky-ish Reverb on top, the famous JUNO-6 Chorus and a super musical distortion. You can dial a vintage slider from top notch serviced to terribly detuned and also a separate color slider to change the card's tone.
It is bi-timbral, has solo/unison/poly modes, does that wonderful sync sound and about the only thing still missing is the arpeggiator and a couple more fancy factory presets which will come in the next versions

It comes for PC/MAC and Linux.

Do you have any pics of your Jupiter-8 analysis setup? How you probed/recorded/logged data and stuff etc.? Not asking for details or trade secrets of the code, just visuals of the process. Curious of the condition of your Jupiter-8 and the kind of servicing it's had over time.

Let's be honest here. It's a beta with incomplete features:

"This is a beta development preview. Some features — including the arpeggiator, LFO and cross-modulation — aren't implemented yet. The beta is free, but you can support its development through the pay-what-you-want option on Gumroad. Any contribution of $10 or more earns you a lifetime license once the final release goes on sale. Note that beta versions may stop working when that release arrives.

What's really free is the beta testing you'll get. Don't insult the forum.... :uhuhuh:

EightyEight is essentially finished (except for the arpeggiator, which will land in a release over the next few days), and the plugin will remain free for as long as the pay-what-you-want model can sustain it. From here I'd rather my plugins simply be judged on how they sound — give them a listen, and if the sound works for you, great; if not, no hard feelings.

Sincere thanks to everyone who's supported the work these past two years and given honest feedback along the way, it's meant a lot. I'll be spending my time working on my third album rather than posting from now on. If you run into problems or bugs, please use the ticket system in the support section of my homepage.

Should I find the time and the muse, I'll compile the journey into a blog post for my homepage or Instagram. I have vintage synths on and off the bench fairly regularly, but I rarely film the process — documenting it takes infinitely longer than just doing the work, and between a day job, family and a life outside of it, plugin development already eats most of what's left.

Why did you created a another thread if there is one already? viewtopic.php?p=9263572#p9263572

"and the plugin will remain free for as long as the pay-what-you-want model can sustain it"

That doesn't inspire confidence

If I add a preset to the Factory bank, it doesn't show at the bottom of the Controls page until I re-instantiate the plugin. Version 0.9.1

And now there's a new free (during beta) product, but I didn't think this one was finished yet.

Quick clarification, since it keeps coming up. These plugins share a lot of their underlying code and DSP, so developing them alongside each other is simply efficient — work on one feeds the other, which is why both are in beta right now. They're advancing together, not sitting half-finished.

To be perfectly clear, and I'll only say this once: every version of EightyEight and EightyTen so far has been released free, despite years of work and study behind it, and it'll stay free for as long as the pay-what-you-want model can sustain it. The terms were always clearly stated on the page, and the $10 lifetime license is completely optional, not a requirement.

If this model doesn't suit you, that's completely fine — there are plenty of good products out there that might suit you better. Either way, that's where I'll leave it; the plugins are there to be judged on how they sound. Have a great night.

Nothing wrong with this model - but calling it "free" in the title of this thread and in your KVR product's page when you say yourself it might stop working in the future or "as long as the pay-what-you-want model can sustain it " is misleading. Just call it a free beta.

Post

The plugin at the present time IS FREE. That's a simple fact, so it's correctly advertised. You do see you can freely download and use it, right? The disclaimer is there so no one is surprised should the model ever need to change—that's the opposite of misleading. The terms are perfectly clear. Misleading would be calling it free and then suddenly asking for payment without notice. If you prefer, I can start charging €99 right now and give you a lifetime guarantee. Your call. In fact, this option already exists for a measly €10 donation — a mere fraction of what a plugin like this really deserves. And even that is completely optional. So enjoy the free plugin or don't use it. And if you don't, what business is it of yours anyway? Moving on.

Post

Why are you creating all of these threads on KVR for plugins and then telling people it's not their business to leave on-topic replies?
the plugins are there to be judged on how they sound.
If you advertise the plugins as being emulations of specific hardware, they're going to be judged on how accurate they are to the originals. If you don't care about them being accurate, and only care about them sounding good, stop using the names of famous synthesizers in your promotional material.

If you advertise the plugins as being free, they're going to be criticized for any potential non-free behavior, like warning that the plugin may become non-free in the future on the other side of the links, and soliciting payments for a license. If you don't care to receive criticism of that, just clearly state "free beta" or "free for now" instead of "free Jupiter-8 emulation" in the title.

What I want to know, and what this dev has dodged answering so far with a snarky reply when I asked, is how can the beta versions stop working when a new version is released. It seems like that could only happen if the plugins phone home.

@Morphoice

Why do you make it so complicated?

Free = completely free, with no restrictions.

Beta = a beta version (no more and no less). Of course a beta is free. Have you ever seen beta testers being asked to pay for the privilege of testing a product? If I ever did, I'd politely decline.

Paid = the product costs money.

Anything else is misleading to customers. It was the same with Unstable. On KVR, it's labeled as "Free", yet there's no genuinely free version to be found. Ever since then, I've ignored Morphoice products. That may not matter to you, but I'm not convinced I'm the only person who feels this way.

Just be honest and label your products for what they are. Don't use a thread title like "A free Jupiter-8 emulation" and then say further down, "The beta is free." That makes me feel cheated.
