BiteRotator
An adaptive phase-rotation plugin that recovers wasted headroom in vocals and dialogue.

I built BiteRotator around a very specific problem with voice and dialogue recordings: some voices and processing produce waveforms that peak much harder in one direction than the other. That one-sided peak can make a compressor, leveler, clipper, or limiter react earlier even though the recording is not perceptually louder.

BiteRotator uses adaptive phase rotation to balance those peaks. It does not compress, clip, or ride the gain. On sufficiently asymmetric material, it can reduce the peak by several dB while keeping the average loudness and frequency balance unchanged. The practical benefit is simply that everything later in the chain gets a less extreme peak to deal with.

It has two operating modes:
  • Adaptive follows the changing asymmetry across a recording automatically. It uses lookahead and adds 764 ms of latency, so it is intended for mixing and rendering with DAW delay compensation.
  • Fixed provides a manual rotation control with 13.6 ms of latency for recording, streaming, or situations where the waveform remains fairly consistent.
The usual position is after processing that changes phase, such as a low-cut filter or corrective EQ, and before anything that reacts to peaks.

BiteRotator's Adaptive mode is designed primarily for mono voice and dialogue. It will not produce a meaningful benefit when the original waveform is already reasonably balanced. Adaptive mode includes checks that prevent it from adding gain or increasing peaks, so if it cannot find a useful rotation, it simply leaves the audio unchanged.

It is currently available as a VST3 plugin and standalone application for Windows and Linux. A macOS version is in development.

There is a fully functional 14-day trial with no payment information required. The introductory price is $19 through July 31, after which it will be $29. There is no iLok or dongle, one license covers three machines, and future updates are included.

The product page has an interactive level-matched A/B player and a waveform demonstration:

Interesting. I don't know of any other plugin that does that automatically.
It will be useful also for brass and reed instruments, or synths with high spectrum content.
Congrats!
