How does one make a smooth spectrogram?

By polishing the code...
Feed it simple things, observe how other sonograms look, observe how yours looks, find the differences. Just give the right prompts, and your agent will (eventually) manage.

A spectrogram is essentially a series of pixelated bins. What is the main technique or approach to turning that into a smooth graph?

well, sure, once you transform the signal into frequency domain - you can do stuff with the "data" before throwing it at the screen
if that's what you want to do..
It doesn't matter how it sounds..
..as long as it has BASS and it's LOUD!
