Would seem Windows is still the best option for an Audio DAW and gaming?

..and just looking at the availability of native Linux plugins (of the 1000+ plugins I have not even 5% has a Linux installer), Linux is not an option. And definitely not for professional audio production.

Using Linux for audio equals masochism.

Thinking about it, that doesn't just apply to audio alone.

Yeah the configuration is a swamp from hell when one would just like to make music. The only thing I configured my Win11Pro is to never update. Then started making music.

Whilst games stress systems differently, if they run better on Linux (and it’s not that uncommon that they DO lately), it offers some indication that there seem to be issues with the Windows architecture and maybe, just maybe, it’s also running too much crap in the background at this point?

At the time, Korg discussed how the Oasys significantly out-performed what Windows would’ve allowed on that (Pentium 4) CPU.. and they had some direct points of reference since they’d also done the Legacy plugins. However that WAS their own custom build of Linux.

The main issue, for Linux, has always been the same. Even if something’s possible, if it doesn’t work (as expected) sometimes you’re in a world of hurt to solve it. The best bet still seems to be trying several distros until you get one that clicks with both you, your hardware, and your use case. Whilst the same can happen on Windows, it tends to be more about stopping Windows doing things with registry changes, rather than you’re missing x package and y permissions and z in a config file etc.

So Windows will still, generally, offer you an easier time than Linux. But Microsoft continues to go from bad to worse. The latest being Windows 11 GDID.

So here's another example, went to install LinuxSampler and Gigedit, nope cannot be done as the PPAs are not in the Ubuntu stable, ok, go to install the PPAs and the OS I am using advises they are all blocked, so now I need to go and find ways to unblock those, then try again to load the PPAs and THEN, finally, I may be able to install Gigedit and then LS....sheesh!!!

Wait. You said that you were running on Nobara Linux three days ago. That's a Fedora downstream distro. You wouldn't run PPAs on Nobara, that's an Ubuntu specific package. You would want to use something from the COPR for Fedora-based distros, such as Audinux, where everything is prepared for you:

Did you change distros to something other than Nobara within the last 3 days?

EDIT: Also, you would need more than just LinuxSampler and Gigedit. LinuxSampler is the engine. You need the GUI too. So you would need LinuxSampler, QSampler, and Gigedit (along with any necessary dependencies). They are all there and ready for use in the Audinux repository on the COPR.

The gaming bottleneck is a HW thing, nothing to do with Linux. John Carmak had a good explanation about it in the past when being interviewed. Windows does not help the situation either, Linux is simply more efficient.

*Id Tech engine interview, forget which version, 4 I think it was. Essentially, it’s about the bandwidth between the GPU and other HW.
