What's your music taste?

I grew up in studios and tour buses and learned early on to appreciate all genres. You get a different appreciation for things when you see the process and skills behind it up close. That said, if I were to open my media player right now I'd most likely go for drum and bass or metal. It's very much a mood thing. Tomorrow it could be something else.

I think this is also a factor. I played a lot of guitar and had a few keyboards in my youth, but it was never serious or dedicated, I just assumed I knew what I was talking about.

I became friends with a musician about 30 years ago who has his own real studio, seeing him work opened my eyes. Then after building my own mini studio and actually doing some dedicated practice, I realized how difficult it is to make any kind of music sound professional. And then strangely any kind of music starts to sound good.

It's quite common that people don't take the opportunity to see or listen to how others work. It's not genre specific either. Some people just seem extremely set in their ways, which is quite surprising with how much natural crossover there is between genres. You see engineers make similar mistakes. It's one of the reasons I always try to set aside time for Agartha Podcast and similar things. Never stop learning, as the saying goes.

When it comes to pop and rock music, I like what was made between the '60s and the early '90s in general. As for my preferences, I'd pick virtually anything that falls under the broad New Wave umbrella, as well as '60s garage rock (pretty different from one another, I know, but that's just how it is).

Growing up in 70's listened to alot of pop-rock... AWB, WAR, America, Etc... then Steely Dan got me looking into jazz-fusion...

Back in 1979 I was at a friend's house & he was waiting for 'chicks' to show up and get drunk/laid & at first I figured they would not show but then they did & I knew why they did... These were the 'uppity chicks' they were just here to soak up the booze & leave... He had Boston playing on his Dad's 33 stereo but the album ended so I put my Jean-Luc Ponty 'Cosmic Messenger' album & minutes later he came charging over "We aren't going to get laid with you playing that shit!"... i said "The only way we are going to get laid is if we put our own hands on ourselves, So we might as well listen to what we want... Quit kissing their asses"... He put Boston back on but 20-30 minutes later they were on their way anyway...
