I own Kaivo and I like the sound, but I don’t use it because there’s a (possibly rare) bug, causing it to crap out under certain conditions and not produce sound anymore. I exchanged a few mails with Randy, who seems to be a nice guy, a few years ago. He said he would look into it, but he never did, and at a certain point I lost interest.

Apart from this bad experience I never liked the prehistoric UI/UX. I can live with it, as long as everything else is top notch. But that wasn’t the case at all, at least for me. I don’t plan to buy anything from them ever again.

Aalto always & forever.
You can be creative in any right place on Earth, and not only in the wealthiest cities. Bring the world feelings from everywhere, and not only feelings of capitalistic or jail environment.

I'll play: love Aalto, am intrigued by Kaivo, and awestruck by the unique and otherworldly sound universe that is Sumu.

This album used Aalto for every non-guitar sound on the record, including drums:

Email newsletter: Aalto 2 nearing beta test stage. Free upgrade for previous 12 months buyers.

Aalto 2 News.

For 15 years, Aalto has been a trusty bleep companion for people in the know, across a whole range of musical styles. You probably have it. (If you're reading this, statistically true!) For the last year our team of vat-grown cyber-ninja programmers (OK, me and John) have been quietly working away to bring Aalto up to date with current expectations and incorporate some of the most common feature requests. We're nearly there. We have a new version on the way that looks and sounds like our old friend, but with:

CLAP, AUv2 and VST3 formats
8 voices
updated lopass gate model
faster, GPU-based graphics engine
popup LFOs galore, like Sumu
a quad version
parameter locks
new workflow / UI improvements
that feature you asked me for seven years ago (maybe)
and much more.

We plan to be at beta in another month, and launching not too long after that.

FAQ:

Will my Aalto 1 patches load in Aalto 2?
Yes.

Will Aalto 2 sound exactly the same as Aalto 1?
It has the same personality but sounds, we think, better, with clearer highs and a more refined take on the lopass gate. We know Aalto has always had a distinct personality and a kind of magic and we’ve worked very hard not to eff it up.

Parameter locks? Really? You changed your mind?
Yeppers.

What about MTS-ESP?
Working on it, we're not 100% sure it gets into v.1.0 but it's coming soon.

What about Linux?
Less certain here, but if we can get a build that works across a reasonable range of distros we'll probably put it out as a public beta sometime around v.2 release.

Can I beta test?
Yeah! Stay tuned for announcements.

What will the upgrade cost?
I'm not sure yet. But I do know one thing.

What's that?
Aalto 2 will be a free upgrade from version 1 if you have purchased your license within the previous 12 months. This means that you can buy Aalto now at the Summer sale price, lock in your free v2 upgrade, and get to know this exceptional synth.

Glad to hear Linux is being considered! A lot of us are there now - the 64bit vst2s work ok with yabridge but native is always better. I bought Aalto way more than a year ago so, if this will be a paid update - I'll pay if Linux is available.

I bought the whole Madrona Labs arsenal this year so does that mean I get the free upgrade as long as Aalto 3 comes out this year? What if it doesn't come out until next year?

Post

I take it as '12 months since this FAQ was written' so as long as you bought Aalto after July '25 then you'll get a free update whenever A2 gets released ...

Well I didn't buy it after July 25th. How could I? It's not even July 25th yet. I bought it earlier this year. Probably around March or April.

July '25 means July 2025...which has indeed passed.

Okay, so does that mean since I bought it early this years I don't get a free upgrade?
