Hi folks,

Not sure if this is the right place to put this thread- apologies if it is wrong, but I can't see a better subforum for now.

I have been building a collection of free browser-based audio tools under the EventFieldAudio name, and I thought it would be useful to keep them together in one thread.

They run locally in the browser, and your audio is not uploaded to a server. I am primarily making them because they let me explore musical processes that would otherwise require a lot of manual editing, routing or bespoke software.

There are currently three applications available.

BreakChopper Web

BreakChopper is a browser-based drum loop chopper and breakbeat generator.

Load your own drum loops, divide them into slices and generate new rhythmic variations using a range of different chop models. It includes transient-aware slicing, deterministic seeds, probability-based structures, glitch processing and a Mashup Mode for combining several source loops.

Each generated variation can be previewed in the browser, selected and exported as audio. Because seeds are deterministic, you can also return to a particular result rather than losing it when you generate something new.

BreakChopper Web is currently in beta and works best in a current desktop version of Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

It can, and probably will, get a bit ridiculous and unwieldy at some of the more extreme settings, but that is where the interesting stuff happens for me.

A Tempo Apart

A Tempo Apart is a two-voice phasing instrument based on a very simple idea: both voices play the same source, but one runs slightly faster than the other.

They begin locked together. The faster voice gradually moves ahead until the original sound becomes doubled, smeared and rhythmic. Given enough time, the voices eventually find their way back into alignment.

The voices are hard-panned left and right, so the drift is both rhythmic and spatial. You can load your own audio, choose how stereo material is folded to mono and check the result with a correlation meter before processing it.

The drift rate can remain fixed or move through a modulation field lasting from five seconds to fifteen minutes. It can also cross through zero, causing the second voice to fall behind, briefly lock with the first voice and then overtake it in the opposite direction.

There is also a small step sequencer with Pulse, Mallet and Clap sounds, so the process can be explored without loading a file.

The app renders offline at 48kHz stereo for up to twenty minutes. I have found it particularly useful for turning drum loops, vocal phrases, guitars and mono synthesizers into evolving textures that do not sound like conventional delay, chorus or reverb processing.

A Room Apart

A Room Apart takes the same phasing principle into multichannel and immersive production. It cannot, and probably never will, address multi-channel outputs, within the browser. The idea is that you create *something*, export it as multi-channel audio file into a DAW that can deal with multi-channel audio.

One sound is copied across multiple voices, with each voice running at a slightly different speed. Instead of combining those voices into a stereo result, every voice remains on its own discrete channel.

You can create between 2 and 16 voices and export them as separate mono objects for positioning in an Atmos session. Alternatively, the app can create recognised interleaved bed layouts including 5.1, 7.1, 5.1.2, 5.1.4, 7.1.2, 7.1.4 and 9.1.6.

Audio can be generated with the built-in pattern sequencer or from your own sample. Stereo and multichannel sources are folded to mono before being distributed across the voices, with sum, left, right and difference options available.

The browser preview spreads the voices across stereo so that you can hear the evolving relationships before rendering. Exports are 48kHz, 24-bit interleaved WAV files, rendered faster than real time.

For Atmos work, I generally export the voices as objects, split the file to mono in Pro Tools and place each voice independently. Voices with very similar rates stay close together rhythmically for a long time, so placing neighbouring rates in distant parts of the room can produce some particularly interesting movement.

One approach I use with both phasing tools is to render far more material than I need. Fifteen minutes of slowly drifting voices will often contain a minute or two where the process discovers a relationship I would never have deliberately programmed.

All three applications are free to use. I will use this thread to post new tools, updates and changes as I continue developing them.

Feedback, bug reports and examples of anything you make with them would all be very welcome.

At some stage I want to do AU, VST & AAX versions of all of these apps but as developing them for a web app is much simpler I can iterate until I get a feature set that I think is somehow complete.

AI disclosure: This application was developed with assistance from Claude and Codex. The concept, musical design, feature decisions, testing and refinement are my own. I am a composer and musician rather than a professional software developer, and AI helped me turn the idea into a working application.

Two more since I last posted in here, both browser based and free.

Memory Decay loops an audio file and misremembers it a bit more each time round. What makes it different from a randomiser is that each version is derived from the previous damaged version rather than from the source file, so errors are inherited and the loop accumulates a history instead of resampling the same distribution forever. The loop is split into 8 to 48 fragments and seven rates act on them per generation: which fragments survive, timing slippage, amplitude erosion, pitch drift, duration, harmonic gravitation toward just intervals, and the condition of the medium itself. That last one is the Basinski part, bandwidth closing, hiss rising, dropouts multiplying, cumulative and irreversible. At the tape rot preset an 18 kHz source is down to around 3 kHz by generation 50. Every generation is kept on a tree so you can go back to any earlier one, hold it so it stops decaying, or fork a second decay from the same ancestor and hear the two come apart. Export a single generation to WAV, or a whole lineage as one continuous piece.

EventField Web turns written language into generative sound. Text becomes Morse-code rhythms mapped across pitch, velocity and duration, then goes through stochastic routing, ambient synthesis, ADSR envelopes, effects chains and spatial movement, so a block of text ends up as a continuously changing field rather than a fixed sequence. Process music and the probabilistic side of Reich and Xenakis are the reference points, though it is meant for experimenting rather than imitating either.

Both synthesise locally, no installation and no audio uploaded. Memory Decay is still beta so I am interested in what breaks, and in what either of them does to material I would not have thought to try.
