What do you think is better, and which do you think uses less resources?

Haven't tried Guitar Rig, Amplitube is ok. Simulanalog Guitarsiute is great for the money!

Who has time to test all this stuff? :D

Green Machine Amp II, of course.

Guitar Rig kicks Amplitube's ass!

Guitar Rig is a lot more flexible and realistic sounding than Amplitube. If you are cash constrained (and who isn't, Guitar Rig is expensive afterall), I would seriously look at alternatives like "Chimp" (amp sim), "Phase90Chorus", and other VG freeware amp sims out there rather than spending $ on Amplitube.

Anyone try Nomad Factory Rock Amp Legends?

I'm essentially trying to find an amp sim that runs the most efficiently while still giving good tone. I don't use much distortion, so a clean, strong tone that would work well with dual Humbuckers would be best. And I know expensive doesn't necessarily equal better. I have Amplitube LE now but find it a bit of a hog.

Jerry Garcia's tone would be nice to have.

Some of Jerry Garcia's rig:

Chandler Stereo Digital Echo
Korg O1R/W
Korg M1R
Emu Proteus/1
ADA MicroCab
Alesis Midiverb
Boss OD2
Turbo Overdrive Boss OD1
Overdrive 2
Boss GE7 Equalizers
Boss OC2 Octave
Mutron III
MXR Phase 100
Groove Tubes Trio
Tube Works Real Tube Reverb
some ADA rack mount FX box

Go to a music shop and try some of the Boss OD stomp boxes. When possible do a a/b comparison with other stuff, like the Tech-21 products. Software amp sims can be nice, but hardware has its own merits.

I give a slight edge to Guitar Rig, but Amplitude 2 could change all that....

Any idea what plug-in might be able to get close to the Mutron III?

There's lots of them-all the Mu-Tron was was a filter with an envelope follower, after all...
I've had good luck with Frohmage from Ohm Force, the filter in the TC Native Essesntials and the Analogic Filter Box for Reaktor/Sessions,to name just three.

Guitar Rig has some cool effects (and a lot of variety) and stuff, but it's not as stable as Amplitude. (at least for me, running it through Sonar)

These days I've been using Amplitude, though. It has a certain really organic sound to it, while Guitar Rig tends to sound more synthy. Just a personal preference.
