Assigning hardware controls in Cubase SX

I'm currently using Cubase System 4 (Cubase SL2 and hareware interface) and I was attempting to assign some controls on my keyboard to knobs/faders in Cubase. I've had some success, but I wonder if I'm msissing something. Some things just don't seem to work and the interface by which things are assigned seems less than specific. Is it possible to control pretty much anything and everything in Cubase, and if so, how? I tried to connect to a mute on a specific channel. What actually got assigned was the "global" mute. I tried it with the global Solo which is right next to it but it didn't work at all. Is it really just this messy or am I missing something. I tried the same thing with Sonar 4 demo and found that this was very easy to do. Is Cubase simply severely lacking in this department?

You might have to download & install a specific 'Channel Mixer' remote device .xml script...?
I had to do this to get my Evolution controller to run in single channel mode.
I got the file concerned from the devices website.
