Cool, i've been looking for some good free VST bit reduction effects myself.

If anyone's using Cubase SX, it comes with a nice BitCrusher effect as well.

Not anywhere near as fun to use as VCS Elite Reducer though... :)

Am I the only one that read the topic as BT reducer? I was really excited for a moment!

Does anyone know if that one is still being sold? :?:

theres also bitmodder VST, the first plugin I made (though I never really announced it)

http://www.devine-machine.com/~steve/bitmodder.zip

its pretty simple, bitreduces + downsamples with a 3rd slider for modulation of these 2 signals.

but I'd much prefer that BitCrusher cos of the name ;)

e-phonic's Lofi works for me.

Thanks, that one's useful :) Now I've got something like 5 bit rate/depth reduction plugins, plus the ones built in to a few plugins, and all of them sound different. You'd think there really wasn't that much room for variation in such a basic thing :D

I don't have Logic, but here's a quick comparison of bit depth reduction by various other plugins on a single drumloop:

bar 1: clean
bar 2: refx trasher2 (4.8 bits)
bar 3: bitmodder (about 80%)
bar 4: mda degrade (4 bits)
bar 5: fruity waveshaper ("bitmunched" preset)
bar 6: tobybear decimator (about 10%)
bar 7: soundhack +decimate (4 bits)
bar 8: fruity waveshaper ("soft munched" preset)
bar 9: bj lofi (4 bits)
bar 10: vcs reducer (about 20%)

Soundwise, some of them just continue to get nastier as you crank the settings up, while others cut out. I'd say Trasher is relatively gentle, which has its place.

Interestingly, VCS Elite Reducer is the only one of them that still does nasty noisy things at the slightest bitcrushing settings.

And here's asample rate reduction comparison:

bar 1: clean
bar 2: trasher2 (6330hz)
bar 3: mda degrade (6300hz (S))
bar 4: bj lofi (6334hz)
bar 5: tobybear decimator (approximately 6300)
bar 6: bitmodder (approximately 6300)
bar 7: vcs reducer (approximately 6300)
bar 8: +decimate (8smp averaging)

Of course the fun is in how the two different effects interact, plus the other features. Each of them is unique. Trasher II *is* cool (though I don't like how the LFO speed knobs work); I may have to spend that $15. But it doesn't "poo all over" the rest :)
