So, a few weeks ago I polled about how many computers peeps have (I've got 2 desktops, 1 notebook).

Anyway, I've been thinking about going down to 1 desktop (and probably keeping the notebook).

My main reason for having 2 desktops is to keep 1 a nice, clean DAW. I don't surf on it. My internet biotch machine is a loley 500mhz machine. I like having a "proxy" to my DAW - I can install, test, play around, etc. on my lame machine before anything goes to my DAW.

But, again, been thinking about reducing my computer count - I like a nice, clean, minimalist-type studio.

So, anyone gone down to 1 machine from multiple machines? Regretted it? Or like it?

Also, anyone surfing on their DAW inside a VM? Was thinking of using VMWare, and only surfing inside the VM, so if that gets screwed up, I can just delete the VM and drop in a new one.

Bah, finally - anyone with a "minimalist" studio wanna post some pics? It's inspiring to me... don't know why... just is.

I do use VMware for testing out software to see if it's stable and behaves itself before installing it on my main partition. I don't personally use it for browsing but more for development and testing with Linux, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and BSD virtual machines. You could go that route if you wanted to just have one machine but have your audio partition untouched by net access. You can always share files between your virtual machine and your real machine. I have a friend who runs Microsoft Office only inside VMware because he doesn't want it on his regular machine. And if all you're doing is browsing and checking email through your virtual machine you can do something like run a Knoppix Linux installation and avoid having to buy another Windows license.

Im with realmarco on this one. I have 2 PCs and a switch box. The beauty of a separate DAW and net box is that you simplify troubleshooting. You can mess up your net box with any trial software you like and still have youre other box working. WIth just one PC, if you experiment you may lose the one box completely.

Thanks for the advice all. Yeah, it is partially the 2nd monitor that's bothering me. Probably cuz it's a non-flat, 21" CRT beast. KVM switch for monitor isn't really an option I think, because I run a 23" LCD on my DAW, and 1: I'm worried about switching messing up my panel (paranoid), and 2: I think KVM's are expensive that handle digital, high rez. Need to reseach that.

I guess my other option is another, cheaper panel, and maybe a KVM switch for the K and M. That would clean things up a bit.

Not that you need the screen real estate, but you could add a second LCD and run it on a KVM. That way you could use it as a 2nd monitor for your DAW and as your primary monitor for the internet computer, and still use only one keyboard and mouse. If you prefer, you could make the 2nd monitor an analog, or get a monitor that has multiple inputs (DVI and analog) and a hardware switch.

heh, yeah, cobalt, I was just thinking this very thing about 10 minutes ago. That might be the way to go - 2 monitors for DAW, switch -> monitor 2 goes to internet machine. me likee...
