Does anyone think ProTools LE 6.4/6.7 is a limiting DAW

I'm using Protools, and i have issues with its Rewire implementaion and the limited track usage. Any PTools users out there?

Post

Used to be, still am, when I have to be. Though, everyone knows LE means Light Edition... Which would leave you to believe its a cut down limited version.

Post

I had a read about the most recent pro-tools at their site and also reviews.
I`m using nuendo, and came from cubse 5.1...I thought that pro tools seemed to be just catching up to the more safisticated hosts out now...but are not up to snuff on many things other hosts have been doing for some time now.

Post

This sucks. :x I shell out over a thousand dollars for a Digi 002 (with IS a great piece of hardware) and ProTools to find that is overhyped Host app is lacking! So.....what now. Cubase, Sonar, what? :?

Post

Am I missing something? Like Ahja said, it's LE, at least that's what it says in the subject.

Post

no your not MISSING anything. I just went with ProTools because a few friends/acquaintances recommended it. But the question now is what Host application should i invest in if any.

Post

The reviews I read were about the new update..6.7 I believe.
They were not pro or con type reviews, just stating the contents of the changes.

It`s only from digitechs desciption of pro-tools on their site, and the others, it "appeared" to me that they were starting to tailor their host more towards the more versitile hosts out today.

My big drawback about pro-tools is that it`s not a host for vst.(although there is a wrapper availible to buy that alows pro-tools to accept vst.)

I also felt I couldn`t gather enough more detailed info on pro-tools to make a real comparison to nuendo lets say.
Check out steinberg cubaseSX on their site and your swimming in expandable pix and all the info you could want to help make a proper comparisn to other hosts.
Not like that with pro-tools...unless i`m missing something.

So...how does pro-toolsLE 6.7 compare to a Steinberg cutdown package like SE ?...I have no real freak`in idea.

gee that only happened to me about a thousand times as a salesman at mars (but then it was 001) :hihi: , tbh then most of the people bought logic..now I would say it depends on your budget and your needs.
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

I've never used ProTools or ProTools LE, but I do know that the big daddy ProTools (plus the hardware it comes with) is about 10x more expensive than what you paid for the Digi 002. ProTools LE is basically cut-down bundled software for Digi's "lower-end" hardware.

PRO TOOLS LE is not a rip off. It's exactly what it says : limited edition. I admit the only reason that Digidesign don't allow more tracks or surround options is the fact that they know that PC's (and Macs) today are almost quick enough to render their Expensive HD systems useless.

Basically LE is a ploy to get you hooked on PT so you dish out the big $$ on HD.

That said, i don't see not running VST as a big minus compared to it being able to run RTAS. I'm thinking of buying an Mbox - The though of running the Oxford stuff natively makes me cream my pants 8)

sorry, its the other way around. Nuendo/Cubase has to catch up with the others...

RawTheory, its all about religion... but after all the bashing it allways come down to what YOU do with your host, and that is the only thing that matters.

So, whats your workflow like, do you record alot or only using VSTi/Rtas. Do you use samples, rex... do you make remixes or even home mastering ???

So you bought PTLE without knowing it's tracks limitation ???

I don't know why exactly people want more than 32 audio tracks... do you record orchestra or big band ???

so enough with my questions: the way to work with this is to group tracks (for exemple a drum set)and bounce them to a stereo track and disable your group so you can always revert if you want to change a plugin setting or the sub-mix.

a little work but this is the way many and many engineers have been working in studio recording.(and always doing so)

agreed...

what YOU do and what YOU need.

Personnaly i never had recorded a band with more than 24 tracks.IF it has to happen to me (more than32) i will just loose the time of the song to bounce or sub-mix. (bounce is only in realtime...that's MY main worry about it)

Hi guys/gals,

I'm a sound engineer!! - I have the digi 002 control surface, and I prefer to track/mix audio within Protools, but I use Logic Pro for midi.

Protools has a better sounding audio engine than any other app - DP4.5 comes a very close second though, but is hard to work with in my opinion.

I'd invest in Logic Pro, so you can use the digi 002 as an audio interface and have as many tracks as you want!

Cheers all!!!!

Thanks for all the responses :)
I'm feeling a bit better about my choices now. The grass is always greener you know. Actually ProTools has served me well since i got it and the few limitaions it imposes on me i've been able to work through and actually learn more in the process. in fact im still learning. I'm running it on a PC though so Logic isn't an option. I do have ableton live 4.1 and i might be using that for my midi because the midi control in Reason is frustrating. I am finding that the mixing workflow in PTools is pretty streamlined. I was thinking about geting Imposcar but it has no RTAS support and i hear that Live 4's audio sounds "thin" so that might kill the VSTi option. The only thing that REALLY sucks, is that now with all the software and hardware upgrades i've made, my PC is struggling to keep up with my imagination. Yet more $ to spend.:? Im thinking about buying a rack mounted Athlon 64 based PC now. Any thoughts?
