this is for REAL men.

gimp is for kids - and fireworks are for females (sure the latter is paywarez).
I second the vote for Cinepaint. This is the professional "Hollywood" version of GIMP. It has been used on a lot of famous motion pictures, for editing frames of digitized movies. It's better optimized to work with film scanners than regular GIMP, and I believe it supports more file formats.

But wait, I just checked the current status of the project. It seems the windows version is temporarily unavailable, and a Mac version is still under development. It seems that some form of Linux or Unix is currently the only viable operating systems to run this program on. That is, till they fix the bugs in the Windows version, or finish the Mac version. :(

Oh well, there's always the original GIMP:

wtf? this should be really easy if you spend any time at all searching?-o

well for basic editing, irfanview. imho the best image viewer, too.

why don't you bring out the gimp if you need more.

and if you still need more, try a free demo of something, as allready suggested.

and if a demo doesn't fit your needs, just pick out your credit card or start learning gimp. almost everything can be done in gimp that can be done in photoshop (if not all or more). it often, at least in the beginning, takes a little bit longer.

afaik.

Not all of Photoshop's capabilities are present in GIMP. Being able to work in color spaces like CYMK and LAB, and the ability to convert from these to RGB are missing in GIMP. I'm also not sure what sort of high bit depth support GIMP currently has. GIMP works well for 24-bit color, but can it handle higher color depths?

To be fair, many of the "missing" features in GIMP would only be missed by professional photographers, printers, motion picture effects houses, and other graphics arts professionals. To most people, GIMP probably appears to have everything that Photoshop has, even if it's not quite true. For most people, either package probably has more features than they will ever really use.

There's also Google's own Picasa (also try http://www.google.com/downloads).

I haven't tried it yet, but I intend to give it a test run now that I've got a digital camera.
