Console is good, there are quite a few of the users on their forum who use it live.
I use it for inserting as a VST/i and for development testing, but as a platform for live work all seems to point to it being a go-er..!!

something simple and stable for live use
I don't need any sequencing capabilities but I do want to add insert effects and combine vsti's.
ableton seems way overkill for what I need.
chainer is great but it is missing some key features (zones....blah blah)
forte seems great but a little buggy.
I have "heard" that V-Stack is buggy.

Did you try energyXT? It's very flexible and modular, and very good and stable for live use (so I'm told), and cheap as well... I don't play live, but if you ask in the energyXT forum, I'm sure some of the users will share experiences...seamoss wrote:something simple and stable for live use

well.....during my lunch break I messed around with energyXT and I must say that I was VERY impressed! I wasn't sure about the gui at first but then I grew to love it very quickly.
anyway, I was thinking that chainer was the way to go for live but I think EnergyXT just changed my mind.
Also...I was trying to push it to crash and amazingly it didn't.
It seems like a steal for the price.
One question....does it let you set up zones for the different vsti's? I am sure it does but I didn't see it at first glance.

I use Forte for live use. I haven't encountered any bugs of note.
I use EnergyXT in Sonar and FLS, and have used it in Forte as well. I haven't used EXT standalone much, I guess because I already had Forte for that.
Disclaimer: I am a beta tester for Forte, and so got it for free.

These kinds of things are possible.
There is a keysplitter project I describe on my resource webpage which should give you a few ideas, just click the related eXT link in my signature.
