- It's like loosing your favorite grandparent or something? He was such a icon and living legend... It really does put the tombstone up for an end of an era IMO.

There will NEVER be another like him. He was a large part of my maturing memories, humour, and education in music, wildlife, interesting American people that WERE NOT stars. Even if it was a night of Charles Nelson Rielly, Zamfir, and a little old lady from Arkansas that collected 'potato chips that resembled nature and history' - I was entertained and informed.
He was the definition of 'NATURAL' IMHO.

Great Post!

While I was only old enough to remember his last 10 or so years, I very well remember watching that great last
regular show with Bette Midler.

David Letterman said it best today:
"All of us who came after are pretenders. We will not see the likes of him again."

Johnny was a legend and one genuinely funny guy-But he was no George Burns, lets face it....

I remember back when I used to watch Carson every night followed by a young David Letterman. That was some great t.v.

He was a cool guy who stayed cool his whole life, right into his later years. David Letterman put it best when he said "All of us who came after are pretenders. We will not see the likes of him again. . . . He was the best, a star and a gentleman."

It's funny how all the forums on the net have that same quote from the same articles from people who thought they would be the only ones astute enough to quote such a statement. Seriously, I've seen this quoted like 20 times. Twice in this thread.

Johnny was a little more than a 'chat show', he was a 'night light' for many. Whether you had a date over, got bummed from all the bad news at 11pm, or just needed a good laugh... Johnny had the knack to put EVERYONE at ease. And there's nothing like getting steamy action going on the sofa, and hearing Ed McMahon suddenly blurt out 'Kaaaaaaaay-O!' amongst all the heavy breathing. Glance at the TV, and there's Johnny with one of his priceless 'looks', directly at you.

He started SO many careers for comedians, had a great wide variety of music, and the skits were unapologetically 'cheesey' - but you couldn't help but laugh. Not because he was 'American', or 'based in Los Angeles'... His good nature and sense of humour IS world renowned simply as a good person.

He wasn't just a 'host' - he was a 'beacon'. As David Frost is for journalism, Benny Hill for bawdy humour, Arnie Schwarzeneger is for 'action heroes' and so on. Hollywood doesn't always MAKE 'good people' - they sometimes luck out with a 'real diamond in the coalpile'...

And Johnny, you came out CLEAN and PRISTINE!
