Many questions about equalizers

Hey guys, I'm pretty much a newbie and I'm looking into purchasing an equalizer. I've been looking at the UAD-1, but I just can't justify 700 bucks plus paying for software.
What are some really good VST options? How do they compare to hardware, and what hardware eqs would you recommend?
Also if I'm using an almost all software setup, how would I use a hardware EQ? I have a bunch of guitars, a korg triton, some VSTis, and an RME Fireface 800 that I just bought. That's it, no mixer. I'm going to be using Sonar 4.
Any recommendations and help would be appreciated.

gliss eq is great from www.voxengo.com, - he's got it discounted at the moment too.
the uad-1 is the king though.
Kind regards

ARE you allready using Sonar 4 or WILL you be using it (because that's what you were saying)?
If the latter is the case, why not try out the internal EQs first?
Apart from that, NyquistEQ is a great addition indeed.

There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

How? In the sequencer I setup a track on its own output channel on the soundcard, connect that to the hardware effect (e.g. EQ but can be anything) and connect its output to an input of the soundcard. Record "wet" on another track, and either mix wet & dry or mute the original dry track.Cyprus wrote:Also if I'm using an almost all software setup, how would I use a hardware EQ?
Before I turned to VST I used the basic EQ on the mixer channel strip, but also got a Behringer 31-band graphical EQ for the more precise trimmings. Just wish I could disable the leds in the faders, it looks like a christmas tree.

voxengo's curve eq is my fav.
i find the spline points UI vastly more useful than a typical parametric scenario. it also has a very good tone.
and ... it has dozens of built in tone models taken from vintage gear.
and ..... it can capture and apply spectrums from any wave file (tho I think this is generally useless - it's something people love to have).
try curve eq.

I don't know if you're 100% sold on Sonar at this point, but Cubase SX3 now allows you to setup hardware FX as though it were a plugin. It even lets you send a control signal through the effect when you set it up to measure the latency and then compensate with PDC. I don't believe Sonar can do this.

Speaking of hardware latency delay. Don't you think a sequencer would be able to send a MIDI note to a hardware synth, measure the delay between sending the note on and when the sound is received at the input, then setup PDC for the outboard synth? This would make our hardware synths so much more useful!
