What is it with these proggists and right-wing nutneckery anyway? If it isn't Collins with the tories, it's Wakeman with the UKIP. Too much widdle affects the brain!
Rush is the greatest 3 piece in history!

Emerson, Lake and Palmer. They were rancid too. Rush were/are worse.

Hemispheres is my favorite but Permanent Waves, especially the song "Natural Science", runs pretty close.jeffn1 wrote:2112 is amazing, but I think Hemispheres is even better. Or maybe it just depends upon your mood.Just started listening to them myself. I'm still wondering how I ever did without. 2112 was an experience I'll never forget.

After that:
2112
Signals
Moving Pictures
A farewell to Kings
Grace under Pressure
Power Windows
Caress of Steel
Fly by Night
Only listed Studio albums of course....Didn't care
for the albums that much after Presto

"Hemispheres" is just plain brilliant.
I don't care for the lyrics, and I am not a huge fan of Geddy Lee's voice.
But I don't think that there is a band going today (with the exception of KC) that could play 'Villa Strangiato'. Not even at half speed.
There is more sheer musical beauty on this album than many have created over their entire career. Whether one is talking about melodies, harmony, orchestration or production.
I know that many hate Rush for their perceived pretentions, their 'music for musicians' elitism, or just because prog-rock is "sad".
But if you can find this album used, or a friend has it, give it a chance.
The drum sounds alone are worth the money.

i now find myself posting to defend fookin' Rush...
yeah, loved 'em as a kid, still got the records (up to the mid 80s) somewhere, dig them out now and then for a nostalgic blast (last few minutes of Cygnus X1, bloody hardcore mate) ...
but: they're not right-wing neo-fascists like the nme etc. always painted them. Yes, Neil Peart admires Ayn Rand and her objectivist thinking (basically stand on your own two feet and everyone benefits) - hardly National Socialism. And Geddy Lees mother was in Auschwitz so ... draw your own conclusions.
3 pieces i find sweet (chortle):
Low, Husker Du, Galaxie 500, Big Black, Nomeansno (bet they listened to Rush...,) Labradford.

here's my perspective....does anybody here remember effing disco?
i was young enough to listen to pop radio and enjoy it until disco came out. bands like rush, thin lizzy, ted nugent and the like saved my mind. i absolutely loved the earlier stuff....workin' man. fly by night...etc. personally, i loved geddy lee's earlier scream voice more than his later voice (like anything after tom sawyer). there's no denying that that band had just a tremendous pool of talent. i had tickets for a show...i think i paid like, $6 for it, maybe $8, right after i bought 'all the world's a stage', double live on vinyl, amen....mom caught me with the cigs
, grounded and no mercy. ah well.
