But IMO a DJ manipulates other peoples records in a club for people to dance to, not their own material that they release under their own name/guise.

And yes, Orbital used to play very different versions of their songs live. Havnt seen Autechre live, but I suspect that they do that.

well, why not? The beatles did not play live for the majority of their career - yet they were still a band.
